Ali told the critics not to expect miracles from him, he always did his own thing and never put himself at risk to impress others. He also commended Patterson for being much tougher than he expected.

In their rematch, Ali was again blasting Patterson in the middle rounds but Patterson took it without going down and was stopped on cuts. An interesting fact about Patterson is that he was never knocked down after round 5. Obviously he had some problems with balance/nerves early.
I know Ali's quote, but seeing the fight myself and noticing the Crowd, referees, newspapers and others reaction I am inclined not to believe him. Joe Louis said: “he could have knocked Patterson out whenever he really went to work. Let’s face it, clay is selfish and cruel.” and seeing Ali's character and the animosity between them before the fight I am inclined to believe all the others than Ali.

Yes Patterson was durable but in this fight the did go down in the 6th, took a count(not from any heavy punch I seem to remember though) and Ali didn't followup, he hit Patterson but never seemed intent on putting him away, Patterson was in a very bad way back then

It says a lot about the guts and heart of Floyd that he did not quit instead slugged on in incredible pain. Lots of fighters including some vaunted starts of yesteryear's and today have quit in lesser circumstances.

        LMAO!

He's always right because according to the *******s on here he knows more than anyone on this site and his opinion is a fact, lmao.

This is the same guy who said JMM would beat Floyd.

Here is an excerpt from Floyd's article that reportedly incensed Ali

"So now we have Clay, and he's practically turned the title over to the Black ******s. Because of that I can't respect him as a champion or as a man. He has a right to believe what he believes, but harm has been done to the Negroes' cause and the way the rest of the world regards it by the one who calls himself Muhammad Ali. I don't deny him his rights. By the same token, I have mine.

I am a Negro and I'm proud to be one, but I'm also an American. I'm not so ****** that I don't know that Negroes don't have all the rights and privileges that all Americans should have. I know that someday we will get them. God made us all, and whatever He made is good. All people—white, black and yellow—are brothers and sisters. That will be acknowledged. It will just take time, but it will never come if we think the way the Black ******s think.

They preach hate and separation instead of love and integration. They preach mistrust when there must be understanding. Clay is so young and has been so misled by the wrong people that he doesn't appreciate how far we have come and how much harm he has done by joining the Black ******s. He might just as well have joined the Ku Klux Klan. One un********ic organization is as bad as another. Put these two groups on a desert island and force them to live together and after a while you wouldn't be able to tell a Black ****** from a white bed sheet."

The Clay word incensed Ali a lot, I don't expect him to come out and say I tortured Floyd, however outspoken he was.

He could be called a lot worse and it's actually premature to be comparing him to what was really a pretty decent fighter in Patterson. Youngest HW champ until Tyson came along (now second,) maybe the second fastest HW ever (behind Ali,) very talented and a guy who'd be a top LHW or CW if he were around today.

I think Khan has potential, in spite of the chin deficiency and if he's able to get past guys like Bradley, Alexander and Maidana, perhaps this comparison might make more sense.

True and very eloquently spoken words by Patterson.

Patterson did not seem hurt in the knockdown. Seemed like he was more in pain from his injured back and all the bobbing & weaving he was forced to do in order to avoid Ali's combinations.

I just don't think that Ali was ever the type to chase after a knockout, he did what he felt he needed to do to win against Patterson and he did land heavy punches in combinations, it's just that Patterson was far from the push-over he was made out to be. Thus it's a bit of an over-statement to say that Ali could have knocked him out early if he just wanted to, especially when he didn't have Patterson in any significant trouble until the middle rounds, and Patterson never went down after the early rounds.

                  Do you have a link?

The NOI were and still are a bunch of cowards, hypocrites, degenerates, falsifiers and racists.

Floyd was right on the money about the NOI.

However, I disagree with his constant referral to Ali, as "Clay". Maybe, it was just gamesmanship on his part, used to get under Ali's skin.

I wrote that he didnot go down from a big punch...Yes he seemed to be more in pain than anything else...and I did write that even compared to Ali's style he did not do much...And there are a hundred men who thought the same mate not only me. You can believe that mate , and I have no problem with that, but I hope you won't begrudge me holding the opposite views as I did see Ali doing these things to Terrel too. Never mind I have to agree to disagree with you.

Bert Sugar's line was fun, but that's all it was, just fun like the rest of his stories. There's rarely any truth or point to them. Obviously Khan is nothing like Patterson stylistically and he was taken out by a wild clubber at an early stage in his career while Patterson was only knocked out by two hard hitting heavyweights.
Don't you think he deserves a lil more respect that just ''fun''. He seen Joe Louis fight live in the flesh. How many people can say that, he followed boxing for over 50 years.

Do you think you know more about the sport than him?
