Ali wanted to punish Patterson and he wanted to do it bad...My point was he could have knocked him out early but he choose to punish him throughout the whole fight, I have seen the whole fight mate, not only the part you are wasting...The whole fight Ali hurt Patterson but never quite followed up atleast till the later stages.
Heres a quote from espn.com
"Before his Nov. 22, 1965 fight with Floyd Patterson, Ali called the former heavyweight champ an "Uncle Tom." He was angry that Patterson refused to call him Muhammad Ali, but continued to call him Clay. Instead of scoring a quick KO, Ali mocked, humiliated and punished Patterson throughout before knocking him out in the 12th round. "
The animosity between Ali and Patterson went before that. Floyd in a newspaper article had also written some pretty harsh words about Ali. Ali wanted to hurt him as he did against Terrel. If you see the Terrel fight he was actually fighting hard there too...Never mind you may differ to me no problem...We both agree on the essential that Bert was way offline here.

Otherwise he would keep getting up.
I would want you to look at round 5-6 when Ali had Patterson hurt, and the way he followed it up. He had Patterson down for a count and still failed to followup or didn't followup . Look at both those rounds not only this part. Ali did want to hurt and insult Patterson and during the fight he kept saying “uncle tom” and shouted “ no contest get me a contender!” In round 6 he had Patterson down and in serious trouble...but never quite followed up even by his standards...
In the 11th and 12th Ali did mount a strong attack..and the fight was stopped.Sorry thats the way I saw the whole fight. Patterson admitted later that he wanted Ali to knock him out, to bring an end to the pain. “I wanted to go out with a great punch,” he said. The crowd booed Ali after the fight. They felt he'd treated Patterson with cruelty, disrespecting a respected fighter. And it is not only me or the crowd who feels this way, Dundee fully aware what Ali was doing shouted "Knock him out for Christ's sake ". These two quotes says a lot about this IMO.The crowd and Dundee were watching this fight too. The referee Harry Krausse said he was pretty sure Ali did not want to KO Floyd but punish him, and he was quite near the action.
I agree though that Patterson was much more durable than he is made to be...Not a great chin but not the glass jawed guy is made to be either...infact far from it.Last edited by Greatest1942; 10-08-2010, 12:51 PM.

In their rematch, Ali was again blasting Patterson in the middle rounds but Patterson took it without going down and was stopped on cuts. An interesting fact about Patterson is that he was never knocked down after round 5. Obviously he had some problems with balance/nerves early.
