Bird's not the best all time, but he's up there for sure. Wasn't even the best of his era, that was Magic, who beat him in the head to head matchups in the finals. Jerry West is probably even considered better all time on a white guys list, considering it's his silhouette used for the NBA logo after all. It would be a toss up between those two for best pure shooter as well. Best all time has to still go to Michael Jordan. Lebron is up there to be sure, followed by Kobe further down there.

By buggery, Tony, you must mean the best pure shooter of all time, not just the best white shooter of all time. That is the first sensible thing anyone has said on the subject.

That's why Bird's team whipped Jordan's team 5 times to 0 times in the playoffs.

That's why Bird's stats were so much better than Magic's in every category except assists, which Magic barely eclipsed him in--Bird shot better than Magic from anywhere, and Magic never won any 3 point shooting contests but Bird won the first three ever. Bird had thousands more rebounds for a shorter career, and many more steals as well. Don't forget blocks, Bird had far more.

Even Jordan made nowhere near the number of clutch shots as Bird.

Now, who was the best hoops man, by blithering buggery?

Alcindor himself says it was the Birdman.

Yeah, before the Bulls started winning championships in 1991. That's the basketball equivalent of Floyd's win over a younger Canelo. Jordan had a much worse team behind him and nowhere near as good a head coach.

Still Michael Jordan, like I said before. Just like with boxing, where we look at resumes, in team sports, it's more about achievements as well. Jordan has 6 championships and probably higher stats than Bird or Magic.

And you know how with fighters, we go by head to head matchups? Well, when Bird and Magic faced each other in their own trilogy of NBA Finals, Magic's Lakers won 2 out of 3. It's close though, you wanna rank Bird higher, go right ahead. Some rank Magic higher because of his 4 championships over Bird's 3 and the head to head advantage. Kind of like how some boxing fans and historians lean towards either Joe Louis or Muhammad Ali as the all time best heavyweight, you can make a strong case for either in both cases.

Was a huge fan of all 3 though, which is why I thought it was great to see Bird, Magic and Jordan on the Dream Team. And I say the Dream Team because any team after that was just the Olympic team. Only the first one was the real Dream Team.

By Buggery some good cases made! I don't know who "the best" is...But I do know my favorites. I used to love the ABA when the New york Nets had Dr J. I loved the league, which was ahead of its time, having the 3 point shot when the NBA had a stick up its rear about the shot and would not allow a 3 pointer. I loved the shooters, the goofy ball, and I absolutely adored the Nets at that time. And the teams were spirited! from the announcers, to the fans, etc.
