I have no problems pulling Benitez off the Puerto Rican entry and replacing him with, say, Wilfredo Gomez

What you call common sense is actually just your personal opinion and nothing to do with common sense in any objective meaning of the phrase. My and most other people's common sense tells me and them that Navratilova is a Czech-American. I'm not saying my common sense is right and yours is wrong, but you're saying the opposite, which is very arrogant of you. It's nothing to do with common sense in any objective sense of the phrase. It's just your or my opinion. And when it comes to history, personal opinions are irrelevant. Historical classifications are and have to be based on consensus, and the consensus is that Navratilova is a Czech-American.

I don't play the hyphen game nor do I play the identity politics game. It may not be considered politically correct but I've never really given a rat's azz if I was politically correct. People can choose whatever legal status they want and more power to them.....but they can't choose what they ARE. I could become a citizen of Mexico if I so choose.....but I would never be a Mexican regardless of what my passport said.

Are you missing the point on purpose? I find it hard to believe an intelligent chap like you could miss it by accident. Political correctness has absolutely nothing to do with it. Nor does politics. fitz was only 9 when he moved to NZ so one could argue a case for him being from either as he spent half his child hood at each location.

Tua was 11 when his family moved to NZ so not quite half his child hood but still arguable wheter he reps NZ.

personally i would have fitz repping NZ over england and leave tua for samoa. As im sure i can find some almost as good to rep england but i might have a problem finding some one as good as fitz to rep NZ.
