    Why Rocchigianni was stripped of his title.

    This is a reply to the other Rocchigianni thread. I cannot answer there since I'm on his iggy list for some reason.

    From boxrec:

    Before this bout, then-WBC Light Heavyweight champion Roy Jones made his intentions to fight Heavyweight James 'Buster' Douglas on May 20, 1998 instead of Michael Nunn, the WBC mandated challenger. The WBC title was then declared vacant and contested between #1 rated Nunn and #2 rated Graciano Rocchigiani. However, in June of 1998 the WBC illegally down-graded Rocchigiani's classification to that of an 'interim' champion, and then stripped him outright, having declared Roy Jones as being the champion in recess. Rocchigiani sued the WBC and was awarded $31 million in damages. Also as a result of this lawsuit, a United States District Judge retroactively restored Rocchigiani’s official WBC Light Heavyweight championship status in April 2003, but only from 03-28-1998 to 04-15-2000, when he lost to Dariusz Michalczewski

      That's some serious bullcrap they pulled. "Downgrading" your own champion when he earned the title. I guess it's about the politics that come with boxing (Jones was a bigger name) but still. Rocky was the real (WBC) champion and Jones was interim. Yet they switched it around and denied him a huge fight.

      Complete B.S, He deserved the $31 million for what they did to him.

        They definetely thought they could get away with it and gain more sanctioning fees and recognition by having superstar Jones as their champion.

                I think he's doing fine. You might confuse him with Dariusz Michalszewski who has spent all of his considerable earnings and is now completely broke. Mostly thanks to some hefty divorce.

                  He got $31 million. He still has plenty of money believe me. He was a huge sporting hero in Germany and earned millions from his two fights with Henry Maske (Another German icon) and Dariusz Michalczewski along with fights with Chris Eubank among others. He also has his own gym, I think he would have spent alot of money in the last 10 years but I dont think he would have spent it all. Even if he did, German boxers were so popular that he could still make more than enough money from other things such as working with the media during boxing events (Henry Maske does this).

                  They also made a film about his life called "Rocky"

                  So he definetly still has quite alot of money.
