Ali vs Holmes: Was it as bad as they say?

Didn't Ali fight Berbick after Holmes and put in an improved performance so it must have been down partly to the pills i guess.

I consider myself a big Ali fan and I've seen many of his early to mid career fights. But I have not seen the bout between him and Larry Holmes. From what I have heard and read the bout was a total mismatch and Ali took alot of unneccesary punishment before his corner halted the fight. Have any of you guys seen this fight? Is it as bad as everyone says? As a fan of Muhammad Ali's should I watch it or forget about it?

That was the saddest thing I've ever witnessed in sports. Ali was embarrassing in that fight. Not only in the ring, but the prefight hype was very sad. He couldn't hardly talk anymore. It was the first time in his career that he couldn't command the room. Press conferences were a sad place as well. Larry Holmes started fast, but quickly took it easy on Ali, becuase it was obvious nothing could help Ali. Holmes actually kept asking the ref to stop it. Finally Angie Dundee showed some passion and stopped between rounds. I have the fight on tape, but have only watched it twice. Live and one replay. By the way, I am a huge Holmes fan and I still can't watch.

Muhammad Ali was not embarrassing inside the ring, even with his increasing illness 'Even after EVERYONE in the world could see there was no way he could win? He was still trying to win, still hanging in there while under heavy bombardment' against Holmes all that was left was his will and heart.

The demise of fighter is sad, but it can also be very beautiful. Boxing is a sport that strips away the layers of a man 'If the fighter continue's in the sport for long enough'. And once all those layers are stripped away, THAT is when you truly find out what type of individual they are etc

You do not find out, what type of person you are in life 'When things are going great'.

There are people out there in this world who attend a gymnasium, lift some weights 'And THINK they are strong'.There are people who run a few miles fully hydrated, with a fancy electrolyte drink 'And believe they have stamina'.

Boxing is one of the very few sports, that can test the spirit of a man 'When Muhammad Ali faced Larry Holmes, that was all that was left' Ali's flesh and physical body was weakened, but his spirit was still strong.

I don't think there has ever been a champion in the history of combat sports 'Who had their spirit tested like that'. Yes fighters sometimes stay in the sport for too long 'But Muhammad Ali was unwell, he should not of been inside of that ring'.

There was nothing embarrassing about Muhammad Ali's performance that night.
