Since heavyweights of bygone eras were so light...

Anyone want to tell me the weight of each fighter for the Toney Galento versus max Bauer match? Honor system... don't look it up, give an educated guess. It suprised me, I have to admit. I know guys were a lot lighter back then, but I thought at least one of these guys was packing the weight on!

I’ve always found it so funny that people hold the old heavyweights so highly while also ****ting on the Cruiserweight division where 90% of the old heavyweights would fight today

Ok... So I was being a jerk to prove a point... Baer weighed in at 221 and Galento 244. The announcers dd not seem suprised by the weights, though they did say "there was a lot of beef" in the ring.

Baer today would probably weigh 245 with modern supplements. Galento probably weighs the same is he did back in the day. I don't see him training any harder today than he did back then.

Galento was funny... He trained by running, after closing the bar he owned, drinking large qua****** of beer prior to. He was solid lol, what was called "hard fat" back in the day.

I agree He would he be heavier. And more sluggish. Its a myth that packing on weight in a boxing match is beneficial, unless the fighter was drained and needs to move up. Ideal weight is the goal. If a fighter needs to be a bit heavier then so be it, but 99% of heavyweights today are carrying way to much weight. Many of them might be cruisers but well never know.

when I look at Tyson Fury, even as tall as he is and 250+ lbs, I think Fury could drop 30-40 lbs, hes carrying that all as lard. If he did it quickly it wouldn’t benefit him, had he trained his whole career lighter though - he would learn to fight quicker and with more agility because everything is easier when lighter.

we saw Wilder come in lighter than Joe Louis (who fought charles) so imo this super heavyweight idea is a combination of freak show tactics and just better quality footage which makes fighters seem bigger. On the scale though and framewise I beg to differ.

                    Buddy Baer - 6 ft 6 250 lbs
                    Jess Willard 6 ft 7 (some say 6 ft 8) 240 lbs
                    Primo Carnera 6 ft 5 240+ lbs
Gerry Cooney 6 ft 6 235 lbs (cooney was a solid boxer at least)

I would rank Fury and Joshua in this same group overall. If this was the division they would all be competitive fights and I’d take Cooney as the victor, Fury second. With guys like Anthony Joshua, he was 237 lbs in his fight with Ruiz, and he still looks like a body builder. I think judging by his thin face and glass jaw, Joshua is actually a tall and lean 215 lbder.

just freaks brought in because its a draw. The big guys today are no better, although Fury displays some ring IQ better than the rest - he’s no master boxer. Squeaking out a decision over an old Wlad and knocking out Wilder are making him look good - partly because he rose to the occasion. However, any great sound boxer would knock Wilder out because Wilder doesn’t defend himself and his legs are glued to the ground because he’s so top heavy. Michael Moorer is much smaller than Wilder, but he would knock Wilder out and easily. Moore is technically sound, his movements are smooth and hard to read. Everything works off perpetual rythms . Wilder is stiff with no fundamentals, someone who got famous for swinging on over matched oponents.
