Does Money make that kind of money if . . .

. . there was an exciting HW, e.g. Tyson campaigning at that time?

Did the broadcasters pour hype and promotion on selling Money's fight because the HW division was in the doldrums?

Unless my timeline is off Money's big fights corresponded with the Brothers K fighting mostly fighting in Germany and they themselves often put fans to sleep.

Was it the absence of great HW match-ups that opened the door for a hundred million dollar payday?

If one wanted to push the argument (possibly a little too far) one could argue Money only had one super fight (and a only a couple of anticpated tough fights) but that's pretty much it.

He certainly was not an exciting fighter casual fan wise; one needed to enjoy the finesse of the game to enjoy TUE and those guys usually don't bring in big paydays. Not record paydays anyway.

    - - l'l floydy couldn't draw flies to his hometown homecoming, the reason Arum let him go.

Haymon had connections outside boxing that Arum lacked, and suddenly the l'l tyke magically filled that Hiphop/Rap/Driveby gap as that market was growing that Tyson once fit.

Before it was all about macho violence, and now about $$$ and bling.

Tyson's fight were part of the problem. People furious over paying PPV for fights that ended in half a round. Lewis had the same issue with his PPVs - see Golota and Grant

Well yeah. I thought that was obvious.

Floyd was the right guy in the right place at the right time.

If there was a Tyson/Ali/Louis type figure at HW, he would've been a P4P type star, but definitely wouldn't have been the draw he was.

Which is funny to me, because that seems to be all people want now, especially with UFC fights. Quick first round KO, then spend an hour on your phone and on social media.

I think the problem is when they build it up to be a fireworks war and it ends in 90 seconds

Floyd was matched against other PPV attractions to make it a bigger fight. Once he got to a certain level, he began touting his undefeated record. That was part of the draw--fans paid to see him lose. Had there been a Tyson level PPV HW I don't think it makes a difference in Floyd's PPV numbers. Oscar was putting up respectable PPV numbers during the late 90's while Tyson was pulling in over a million buys for each fight.
