Curry was going through a lot outside of the ring. Leonard screwed him over concerning his career, and he shouldn't have stayed at 147 after his title defense early 1986. Give credit to Lloyd, who had the skills and attitude to take advantage of the situation.

He also got screwed by SRLeonard when he backed out of their promised big $$$ fight, so he was a hot mess. I am not diminishing Honey's achievement because he had to overcome the horizontal Brit syndrome to pull it out.
The 'screwing' story I heard was that Curry allowed Leonard to council him out of a Hagler match, saying it was a bad matchup, and then set up the match with Hagler for himself.

Curry made this claim - that SRL had deceived him purposely - for what that is worth.

              - -Leonard inactive when Honey KOed Curry, but the gist of my understanding was Leonard was supposed to be in the ring that night.

At any rate Leonard fought Marv the next year in 87 and the rest is a reprise of Leonard's conniving history.
