I don't know but I have heard for years its really hard to get video of a young Robinson when he was a lightweight. this is before he was a professional, but its a nice nugget. He was alas, very young... hence my wise a s s remark lol.

Damn amateur boxing use to be a real fight what happened to that? Can we blame the Eastern Block judges for turning it into the snoozer it is today?

I'd pay to watch that kind of amateur boxing - now I grab the remote when Olympic boxing is on.

Well... Now that you have said it, that makes two of us who have exclaimed "gee look at the giant elephant in the middle of the room."

No it's that Eastern European style that the Olympic judges impose on the boxers that makes for boring bouts.

it's becoming the same problem, we sometimes talk of, with the pros, E.g. Chavez-Taylor. On the score cards two heavy blows will be negated by five pitty-pat punches.

In the amateurs there is no reason to ever let the boxing match turn into a fight, at times that kind of aggression can actually hurt you with the judges.

This is now becoming the go to style among the pros as well, E.g. Mayweather. The intent is to win the boxing match on the score cards and at all cost avoid actually fighting.

In regards to the head gear, Anerican football has taught us that protective head gear opens the door for long term brain damage.

It is of course bad to get a concussion, but a few concussions has less damaging effect on the brain long term than being hit in the head hundreds of times. Each small blow to the protected head still causes micro tears in the brain.

This is why the terrible dementia we are seeing in ex football players is most common among linemen, who on every play slam their helmets into each other, from just one yard away.

The players who take a few big shots over their careers, E.g. quarterbacks and wide receivers are not showing the same long term damage.

Paradoxically the protective head gear in boxing allows the fighter to take too many blows. It is better for them to box without the protective gear. Without the gear a few solid shots to the head will cause the fight to be stopped, as it should be.

Fighters are doing less and less sparing and trainers who push fighters (wearing protective head gear) into 'gym wars' should have their licences revoked. IMO

Some great observations Pep... I have to say I agree 100%. The human body is adaptive and will inevitably find a way to protect itself. its why our forehead is the hardest bone density... Over many many genetic moons we learned that when something is coming hard at our head...put it down! And not coincidentally the way we were physiologically made to punch is down on a target like an ape...

Too much protection breeds a false sense of security. Your comments also hold up as evidenced by Football a la Euro style. It turns out the seemingly quaint and benign process of a "header" is a major contributer to brain problems down the line. Boxing with head gear also eliminates the major way we see movement, our peripheral vision. It encourages and makes boxing into a glorified fencing match. Fencing, once an art of great skill, grace requiring a strategic mind like a chess player, is now all about speed on a line where no one is allowed to deviate from. Gone are all the combat aspects.

Fighting with headgear is like driving a car with blinders on... They give a horse in cities blinders so they don't get spooked. the idea is they can only see straight ahead... Ive often felt they do so with Asian drivers here in San Francisco as well... ooppps! going to hell for that one. lol.

The problem is we see movement with our peripheral vision. All the subtlety that is part of boxing as an art comes from perfection of timing. You cannot do things that require such properly... like counter punching for example, or slipping a shot at the last minute. it is so bad that most people donot even know that a counter technically speaking is performed so that as the initial punch is just getting to completion, the counter is executed but I digress...

I can say from experience that head gear is a pain in the but, I always prefered to take the risk of getting tagged hard.

I thought gloves were smaller too, but could be wrong.
