I'd like to see Floyd fight someone like Pavlik or Taylor before any talk of past great MWs
what do you mean by “handled” Ray Robinson?

I think it would be almost impossible for Mayweather to keep LaMotta off.

Robinson, who was 3 inches taller than Mayweather, had serious firepower, combinations and a strong jab and he still found it very hard to fight Jake, Robinson might've won most of their fights but aside from the last one they were all close decisions.

If they were the same size then Mayweather would win, but LaMotta is a middleweight and Mayweather is a small welterweight. If Mayweather beats a guy like Pavlik or Abraham then I'll believe it.

This fight isn't exactly LaMotta at his best but he does quite well against Robinson in these middle rounds 5 and 6.
The way I see this going is Mayweather being elusive, but unable to mount an attack and hence lose a decision. Or he could “die trying”, you know try to actually win by fighting as the ”cute“ defensive plan didnt work. I would not put that past his win mindset, but it would end up in a stoppage loss for Mayweather.

He certainly doesnt have the firepower to *keep* La Motta away, but he had the skills to *stay* away. With this respect it would be interesting to read how La Motta's fights with Holman Williams played out, althought Williams was pretty much shot by then.

To see how Mayweather would deal with someone of LaMotta's size a large jr. middle would be more appropriate IMO, as La Motta fought in the same day weigh in era). Pavlik and Abraham could not make 160 on fight night even if they chopped off an arm...

Are you serious? great stamina, great conditioning, ability to relax and take “breaks” in the ring... Out of today's fighters Mayweather is the most suited for 15 rounds...

I personally believe that LaMotta would have the K.O inside of 10. I also feel that "Money" is one of only a few present fighters that could last 15 respectfully.

This thread was of course spurred by "Money's" recent "I'm better than Ray Robinson" jack.

          Obviously.

From what i have heard and seen of LaMotta although he was very good he often gets a bit overrated, In this matchup i would favour LaMotta but it wouldnt be one sided

LaMotta was a large middleweight (in terms of poundage at least)...Floyd is a small welterweight.

Same day weigh in... floyd would not be a small welter in the 40s, he would be pretty average. And La Motta would not be a large middleweight today

Exactly, mute! Lamotta's actually a pretty small MW when compared to some guys like your Pavliks or Abrahams of today. I asked that question (about weight) because Floyd did just beat De La Hoya who was physically about the size in weight as Lamotta by fight time. While, i'm thinking, Maywheather stayed closer to 147 to keep his speed.

About Robinson falling through the ropes. I think he got hit with that punch and was stuned a bit. Kind of like the Ali/Chuck Wepner fight, where Ali was stunned and falls backward. I'm thinking that was the case, since you said he was back in the ring by the count of 9.

If you look at Lamotta's record you can see that he won most of his wins by decision, meaning he couldn't or didn't attempt to knock most fighters out within the 12 or 15 rounds *or whatever* how many there were.

Robinson never had a srong jab, his was more of a peppering jab as you can see by the clip. I actually think Floyd is better in that department, as well as being quicker, and has better defence making him is harder to hit. I think they call Jake the "Bronx Bull" because he kept coming forward dispite getting hit. Not because he ran guys over.

LaMotta was not a very big puncher.

He might stop Floyd though as he would have a dozen pounds or so on Mayweather.
