What about Holyfield's inside game could Bowe not replicate and exceed?

You know they both fought Holly... but very different versions, with very different results.

Lewis had the better career, and his style could create massive problems for Bowe. But in 93 he wasn't fighting as his best self. And even at his best, he had a tendency to cave against determined fighters.
Lewis had a bad outing against Mercer...a fighter who could exploit the opportunity... it happens. Holy is relentless and you forgot about the first fight where Lewis won easily. The judges can't take that away from Lewis.

Bowe would not exceed Holly... Both men could fight inside... Bowe was not better.

Mercer had a cinder block for a head similar to Tex Cobb but unlike Cobb, Mercer was a good boxer. I wouldn't put too much stock in how well Mercer did against Lewis as a gauge on how Lewis would do against Bowe. Bowe vs Lewis would be a close fight but I think Lewis had more desire and dedication than Bowe. I'd favor him..

There are some journeymen fighters who have a lot of skills and are often underestimated... Mercer is one, Ross Purity, Orlando Salidad... These guys don't always know how to win, but they can fight, have skills and on a good day for them, apple carts can topple!

          - -Mercer an Olympic gold medalist and title holder.

          Not a journeyman.

Is that a joke!? That's flaccid even by your standards.

Mercer wasn't intimidated by Lewis' power, and didn't permit him space to establish his jab. Lewis felt Mercer's power and opted not to push the fight. There's nothing disputable about that. At his best Lewis would falter when his competition didn't. He did great when his opponent was considered DOA (Golota, Holyfield I, Tua, Botha, Tyson) and that's what he expected in the rematch with Holyfield and attempted to hoodwink Vitali. We know how those fights blew up in his face.

Lewis could be beaten on the inside. You're crazier than we have already established if you believe Holyfield had greater power than Bowe.

Again, it's well established that Bowe beat Holyfield twice - stopping him in the rubbermatch. It's well established that Bowe was a much more overwhelming force offensively than Mercer.

If Lewis is to win this fight, it's like Golota, by winning a battle of the jabs. That's reasonable to expect, except that Lewis didn't have Golota's beard or in-fighting ability. Bowe showed tremendous heart in that fight, real resilience. He's not going to go down like a Frank Bruno or Razor Ruddock.

Mercer never took a beating him Bowe did against Golota. Mercer had a first rate chin, but I do believe his toughness is a bit exaggerated. A lot of his success against Lewis was based on Lewis' own self-doubt.

Bowe outside the ring was a mess, but inside the ring he was always focused. In '93 he was still fit and sound. No reason to believe he was unable to do one better than Mercer would do several years later against an even better version of Lewis.

you seem to forget that Ray Mercer took an epic beating at the hands of Cerefino Garcia.

Leotis Martin, who was the greatest Heavyweight to never be crowned champion, did an excellent write up on it. It's featured in his cookbook on ***ish Cooking - which has been destroyed by the Clintons.

Your usual contrived BS with no facts what-so-ever... Mercer was not a big puncher Rusty. And that second fight with Holly did not "blow up" it was a decision with most feeling Lewis got the nod. Stop the BS!!!

And who ever fought Lewis on the inside? Care to show us what you are talking about?

More BS triangle theory... involving Mercer and Bowe... Triangle theory is the last vestige of the casual... Before one is dragged into the reality that styles often determine fights. Mercer was a tough journeyman... If given a chance he would win and in fact, may have deserved the nod against Lewis. But most of that can be attributed to human consistency.
