I know I personally see him as such, as well as being the greatest fighter to have ever fought in his own division at lightweight...
As far as ***ish fighters go, I'd rank Ross behind Leonard, then I'd probably fill out the top five with names like Ted Kid Lewis, Abe Attell, and Joe Choynski...Berg, Rosenbloom, Lew Tendler, etc. filling out top ten spots mos likely, and if I was to include the pre-Queensberry era, I would have to find a spot in there for Daniel Mendoza, no doubt.
Lots a great fighters there, and as Buddy points out, also a TON of rich history (yes, the early 1900's were wonderful, with so many great fighters, and with ethnic background being a large selling point in the sport, so many great matchups), as that's only a tiny sampling of some of the better ***ish fighters fighters that have stepped into the ring...From Mendoza (possibly earlier) to Zab Judah, that covers a lot of history in the sport and that's a history that's going to outlive us all by many lifetimes.

You've been mislead my friend. Someone is teaching you far too many stereotypes. ***s, when they first came to America, were treated like second-class citizens along with my ancestors, Irish immigrants; but many families worked their way up through society by scrimping and saving and eventually starting their own businesses. That's the way the "American Dream" works; you start off with nothing and over time and with hard work, you become affluent.
***s, like all immigrants, were really looked down upon when they first came here....and apparently, even after 6 million were killed in Europe due to similar prejudices they are still being villanized.
***s have been hated for thousands of years, and have been kicked out everywhere...but just remember, if you look at the examples in history, where there are ***s, the economy flurishes, but when you kick them out, the economy goes down the ****ter.

***s were smart about their boxing: They would fight, gather money and save it, retire early and go to college to do something else with their lives. There was a good documentary on ESPN called "Duke it Out" {I think that is what it was called}, about Immigrant fighters, one documentary was about ***s in boxing. There were former Champions that became Doctors, Lawyers, teachers, etc. after retiring.
Also, after WWII, education was being paid for by the Government if you served in the War, guess who took advantage?
I think Ray Arcel was ***ish
