Comments Thread For: Canelo: I Don't Really Care What The Critics Say

Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (45-1-1, 32KOs) is not concerning with some of the recent criticisms being voiced on social media.

Canelo is training for his scheduled fight with WBC champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33KOs) of Puerto Rico on November 21 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. HBO Pay-Per-View will carry the bout. The fight is taking place at a catch-weight of 155-pounds.

Exactly. If I was in a pro fighters shoes, I would be the exact same way. People are always going to talk **** and criticize even if you are the best. I wouldn't give 2 craps about anyone except my team, family and my true fans. Positive Vibes all day.

Yes, this is true. What goes around comes around. Golovkin avoided the superior fighter (Ward) by requesting a draining catchweight. Cotto or Canelo will now avoid the superior fighter (Golovkin) by requesting a draining catchweight.

Ward wanted the Golovkin fight at 168 because Golovkin had previously agreed to two other fights at that weight. Cotto and Canelo want the fight at 155 because Golovkin had previously agreed to fight at that weight and even lower (154 for Mayweather or a big PPV fight).

Canelo won't be able to please everyone any better than any other fighter could do. And since professional boxing can be a very dangerous sport, Canelo should carefully consider each and every opponent whom he will face; however, eventually Canelo's career will be in great part determined by the fighters he took as his opponents (and how he fared during his fights) as well as those fighters whom he did not meet in the ring (for whatever reason). I will assume that Canelo is aware of this. By the way, I want the fight (GGG vs Canelo) to be at 160. What I want and what Canelo needs to do are two different things.

Correction: Ward wanted the fight at 168 because he knows that he will need every possible advantage that he can get if he ever fights GGG. Also, perhaps Ward's insistence on 168 is his way of declining a fight with GGG.

But the critics are fans of boxing. I don't care if Canelo and Cotto fight at a catchweight if that's what they agree to, but against GGG, there shouldn't be one because there is no agreement and by right, Canelo can come in at 155 if he want and GGG should be able to come in at any weight up to 160. Both are within the middleweight limit. One of the main reasons why he had so many critics is that he comes into his fighter a couple pounds bigger than GGG. So if he's heavier than GGG between fights, during training camp and the night of the fight, he should be considered a middleweight. This weight drain may come to hunt him.

Yes, you are right; however, Canelo has the right to decline the fight (and will likely lose the belt - if he beats Cotto - for not fighting GGG at the sanctioned weight class limit of 160).
