They both would've been ideal four years earlier.

No. Mayweather and Leonard sort of. Because they are both slick fighters, who the best of their era (Mayweather arguably is). But Miguel Cotto is not as great as Marvin Hagler. Cotto has won 4 titles in 3 weight classes and is a no doubt HOF one day, but Hagler was one of the greatest MW of all-time.
I'd say in terms of greatness, Mayweather-Pacquiao is the Leonard-Hagler of this era. But, in terms of going up in weight for a huge challenge, Mayweather-Martinez would be similar.
Cotto is great no doubt, but Hagler was another level.

They are not really too similar stylistically.
Leonard was a boxer-puncher, with the ability to be a fleet-footed dancer when he wanted, which he did against Hagler. I doubt Mayweather can do that at this stage in his career, he's gotten more flat-footed as he's gotten older. Leonard threw more combinations and let his hands go more, Floyd is careful with his punch output/selection. He's also more defensively sound/technical. Leonard used his legs and head movement more for defense, Floyd uses the shoulder roll, or a high guard.
Hagler and Cotto on the surface may have some slight similarities in being boxer-punchers who can apply pressure at times, and have heavy jabs. But that's about it. You would not watch Cotto and think "he reminds me of Hagler". They don't fight alike.

Hagler-Leonard??....................................*cric kets*...........................................
The only similarity is that it is taking place in a ring with ropes and boxing gloves.
