I have no ****ing idea how the thread went in this direction and cant be bothered to find out, but the only people that give a **** about 1776 are Americans, because its basically their origin story and source of their identity as a distinct nation, even though it was essentially a British civil war and the majority of modern day Americans werent even in the country yet.

For Britain and other countries that actually have thousands of years of history, its a drop in the ocean.

That's fair to say. Americans typically don't expect others to celebrate our independence day, and why would we? It is central to our origin story, as you put it, and not, say, that of Myanmar or Ecuador or Nigeria.

The American Revolution was in no way a British civil war, though. It was the casting off of the imperial hegemony of an oppressive European power and the establishment of a new nation with a new identity; one without any desire to be a part of its former masters territory or rule.

And yes, at 249 years now since the US Declaration of Independence, our presence on the world stage is relatively recent. But what a profound impact we have had in such a short time, in every facet of life.

He is right it was essentially a British civil war, 80% of the "Americans" at the time were British.

So for all intents and purposes it was just Brits who were either Puritans and didn't like Catholic sway on the crown.

Or they just didn't want to be under the yoke of the monarchy in general.

And the idea of a "new identity" is laughable, it could be argued the US operates as a republic with the outward trappings of monarchy.

And the UK operates as a monarchy with the outward trappings of a republic to make matters worse the UK isn't even a real monarchy, it's a constitutional monarchy.

Which only makes the idea they're somehow vastly disparate, laughable to say the least.

Britain invented - The railways, steel tracks, railway locomotives, steam engines, pistons (fundamental technology), first engine powered ships obviously steam powered ships, propellers, steel ships, the steam turbine for powering said ships but now it powers generators in every coal, electricity and nuclear generating plants which FYI is responsible for 50% of the worlds electricity.

The turboprop aircraft which is the basis for the gas turbine which is responsible for a further 20% of the world's electricity.

Pneumatic tires, tarmacadam, iron (steel) bridges, cat's eye reflectors, caterpillar tracks (tanks).

The industrial revolution - flying shuttle, powered looms, spinning mill, threshing machine, mechanical seed drill, phosphate, fertilizer production. selective breeding.

Portland cement, steel boar machine which obviously leads to the lathe, slide rest, micrometer, hydraulic press, mass produced polythene, industrial steel hammer, the Bessemer steel process, the tin flotation method.

First ever underwater cables, telephone, TV, liquid crystal cavity magnetron, radars, CAT scans, Ultrasounds, chlorination, chronometers, atomic clock, the "world wide web", gas stoves.

Discovery of the proton, neutron, electron, anti-matter, The Higgs boson, theory of evolution, DNA at Cambridge university, DNA fingerprinting, antiseptics, antibiotics and vaccines, law of motion, law of gravity, Maxwell's equations (electrodynamics), magnetic induction (Faraday), Newtonian calculus so on and so forth.

And I could keep going damn near endlessly with the examples of integral to modernity processes and technologies that Britain has invented that have not only broken us free of backbreaking manual labor and hunger but allowed us to maximize for human flourishing and you to live the comfortable life you do.

Britain is literally the backbone of the modern world, yet you have the audacity to claim Britain is most famous for losing what is tantamount to a civil war...

P.S. BTW I've barely mentioned any of the things people from Britain have invented or extensively contributed to.
