Although he has improved alot he still has something that gives him a clear edge and that is that speed kills if you dont know how to handle it. In the great words of David Diaz "he was just to ****ing fast man". Manny just has some sick speed.

Yes Pac can do some backwards fighting but so can Cotto. Infact Cotto's whole fight against Margarito was on the backfoot mostly counter punching so I'm not sure where this is leading to. Pacquiao is in no way a counter puncher stylistically. He's a come forward imposing his will type of fighter that will go down with the ATG's for aggressive fighters. His counter punching is simply when he's being attacked as a way to make his opponent scared to try to attempt to rush him as he does to them. Against Cotto I honestly don't know what his best way to approach the fight. He can't let Cotto take control with his pressure style body punching because Pac can't survive that all night and he can't simply try mauling Cotto because Cotto will fight back as he's a big and strong guy. It took Margarito 11 with bricks to chop Cotto down. I'm sure Cotto doesn't fear regular gloves from a smaller fighter that will be 10lbs less than him on fight night. Or so that's what he thinks. If Manny can get Cotto's respect early, he has a chance, if not, expect Cotto to steamroll him.

i'll be the first to admit that pac has significantly improved. that hes shown discipline in his repetoire. he doesn't fight in wild punches like he always did, but instead collects himself and actually boxes. but if you pay close attention he still has the tendacy to throw wild punches. which leaves him open for clean and precision shots i.e JMM. This is all evident if you play close attention to how he fought Hatton in the first round and how he fought Hatton in the second round.

Whether its because of Roach teaching him to counter punch or its because of Manny's experience fighting Morales and Marquez, Pacquiao can now counter punch.
Example 1: Counterpunching the Counterpuncher

Pacquiao faked a jab and as soon as Marquez started countering with a left hook, Pacquiao ducked and threw a huge left of his own. Perfect. Common during Pacquiao's sparring session but rare during his actual fights.
Example 2: Backpedal Counterpunching

When Marquez moves forward, Pacquiao backpedals for a counterpunch.
Example 3: Right Hook Counterpunching
In past interviews, Pacquiao said he practiced counter-punching (during Diaz, De la Hoya, Hatton training). So By the time he reaches Hatton, it was so automatic, that when Hatton telegraph his left punch, Pacquiao countered with his right hook roll under move, EVEN BEFORE HATTON PUNCH.
That's almost the same move with Marquez only in reverse. This means only one thing, Pacquiao can now counter punch with both hands.
Haha!
