    Gunboat Smith is another.

Although looked down upon today by revisionists Dempseys bout with Carpentier was highly anticipated going back to 1920 when the fight was initially discussed.

    So Sharkey is No 1

Fulton and Smith are also in consideration.

Willard would be in the top five as he was the champion and was considered unbeatable by many. In fact even with the destruction bestowed upon Jess in 1919 he was still considered a live opponent for Dempsey as a challenger into the 20’s. Some giving him the best chance of defeating the champion.

In case it wasn't clear, the thread question is about the best win on Dempsey's official pro record.

It's not about imaginary wins or about what you wish had happened.

Dempsey walked away from the second Tunney match feeling redeemed/victorious. He never bother to ask for a third fight; he knew knocking out Tunney once was a good as it would get. He saw it as a personal victory.

Dempsey was concerned over his vision. He kept his chin tucked so Tunney targeted his eyes with the jab. He was a mess after both bouts. His fear was after three such beatings he may have permanent damage.

Yea that too in a big way. I was just suggesting that Dempsey was satisfied enough with the knock down/knock out 'not' that it made it easier fro him to walk away.

He was often quoted as saying that the 'long count' was a 'lucky' moment for him, he knew he was finished but got to walk away feeling redeemed.

I feel the Willard fight is a one punch fight.

For the first minute and a half Dempsey crouched, moved in and out, bobbed and weaved; Willard tried to grab him and lay his weight on him, as he had Johnson, but Dempsey wouldn't stay inside.

Dempsey caught him with a vicious left hook and Willard (as so many proud fighters did before the mandatory eight count,) jumped to his feet before he was clear headed. No neutral corner rule and Dempsey was all over him. Today that fight gets stopped after the second knockdown, definitely after the third and not because of a 3KD rule, Willard just wasn't competitive after the first KD.

It was a one punch fight, and then just a slaughter.

Their is a article I found recently where Dempsey describes how hard he hit Tunney for that KD in round 7 of fight two. It’s obvious he thought that left hook was a ko blow. My thought is that it was had the count been for ten vs a 14.5 count.
