And you don't need to be oldschool to realize that!!
Well who is or who isn't number one does not matter to me, what matters to me is how contemporaries rated him, of course there were those who insisted Dempsey was better but it seems a minority view. In my opinion Joe Louis is immortal, rankings aside, he was incesdibly smart and cool inside the ring and his power was enough I believe to KO any fighter who ever lived, a couple may not have given Joe a chance to land that blow but if he lands some its goodnight. Joe was small compared to todays heavyweights and really the term Heavyweight does not really apply to Joe in todays terms. I am always a believer that a good giant man beats a good non giant.

Good post!.
Just a side note, although he used to fight at 200lbs or little more, Joe Louis was not so small. He was 6.2, while Ali is 6.3 , Tyson around 5.10.

Your post ain't to bad itself: Guys like Louis and Marciano called "small" had no extra weight on them.... And if you seriously look at the numbers over the last fifty years or so you will find that there is no proof that a well equipped heavy need be anywhere North of 222 and South of even 190. There were always big guys around and the big guys today do not move particularly well. Lewis happened to be a great champ who was super sized....no comment on the Klitschkos....
But lets keep in mind that history tells us smaller aggressive heavies like Tyson and Holyfield can easily compete with bigger guys like Bone Crusher...
People do not genetically change in a century or so....we are basically the same size and the problems that a guy like Klitschko, Lewis or other big guys would have is going 15 rounds.

Thanks!
And no, it's not a genetical change.
In my opinion, what people know as "training and nutrition " has nothing to do with actual training and actual nutrition. It has to do with the exponential improvement of medical techniques (applied on sports).
If Joe Louis wanted to make mass, he needed to eat lot of red meat while training even harder to keep in shape and not lose speed. Nowadays an athlete can get 3g of pure creatine a day and make mass way more easily. And it is only a small example.
The times of pasta and orange juice are over. Good bye D'Amato, welcome pharmacies.
