The Old Left Hook was my favorite poster here. So mean and witty, hilarious but knowledgable. I would always enjoy the old man insulting others including myself and then drop a gem of knowledge in the next thread. I wish they brought him back.

- - Ali was running in high quality dress shoes at the start of his career even if they had crude running shoes then that we used for gym duty. When we played tackle football in shorts with most sans those running shoes, ie shirtless and barefoot, we injured enough guys on the football team to have our games declared off limits for them if they wanted to stay on the team.

By the time of Berbick, Ali must've had some updated running shoes, but in a run with an out of shape reporter, well, that was the Ali level by then.

Champ had finished his morning workout at Angelo Dundee's Fifth Street Gym in Miami when I asked him to run on the beach. Ali agreed and told me it would be good training for his leg strength running on the sand in combat boots. He told me he always ran in heavy combat boots so his boxing shoes would feel lighter when he was in the ring. I thought of something Muhammad had said years before, 'The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses - behind the lines, in the gym and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights'

- - He was running in London wearing street shoes. Yeah, certainly there was a shoe revolution as combat boots came into wider use, but I doubt he ever used my cheap gym shoes.
