    Willie Pep movie

So there has been a Willie Pep movie in the works for the last several years. Apparently it's getting off the ground again with the lead being played by James Madio. Also interesting is Connecticut native and former light heavyweight contender Iceman John Scully will be training Maddie for the part. Madio certainly has an uncanny resemblance to the late Willie Pep, hopefully he can learn the moves.

This will certainly be of interest to me as a fan and because I got to meet Mr. Pep 5 or 6 years before he passed away.

Oh yeah, he kinda does. I remember him from USA High and the movie Hero. Aren't there only a few Pep fights that have survived on film?

I wonder how they will handle the Lulu Perez tank job; will they choose to touch on it.

With Pep gone there is no fear of a libel suit but will they go 'history as it should of been' or 'history as it was.'

Worst yet, will they do a 'Max Baer' job on Saddler so they can have a villian and a dramatic arch.

And what about the very ugly 4th fight with Saddler will they white wash that away by simply ignoring it happened.

It is possible they will follow the Cinderella Man forumlua and end the film with Pep-Saddler II, that being Willie Pep's finest night.

If they do end the film there, they are free from dealing with the Perez fight and the two foul filled rematches with Saddler all of which came later.

I'm sure there are. But the Pep-Robinson amateur fight isn't one of them.

Good questions. I'd hope they would include that portion of his career as it would help bring that era and his entire career into greater context.

The Pep-Robinson amateur fight might be a great place to begin the film.

A rural venue (I believe described as a barn by Pep) with a small ruckus crowd pushed up onto the ring apron, with young boys actually straddled across the rafters, watching a skinny black kid and a small Italian kid wailing away, like amateurs, but showing the raw speed, skill, and grit that would mark both their careers.

A good place to set the time period, meet the character and begin the narrative . . . me thinks anyway.

I hope they watch plenty of film and get the fighting style right.

Shame Kenny Weldon passed away, he was trained by Bill Gore who trained Willie Pep. Would have been a good person to consult.

That is actually an excellent idea. I love it!
