    Wilt vs. Ali

In keeping with Lefy's "freak fights" I am wondering who you think would have won this fight, and why?

Please try not to digress the conversation into who ducked who, or why it didn't come off, we have played that out many times - I am curious how you guys think this fight would have gone.

P.S. I realize while 'why the fight didn't happen' is legit Boxing History this question probably belongs in fantasy fights, but the 12 or so guys on this forum are the only ones I know and it's your opinion I am interested in. If Battling Nelson feels the need to relocate this thread, I understand.

    - -Video footage shows a highly orchestrated plum arranged by Cosell for ABC with Ali clearly shying from Wilt and refusing to sign. Wilt had been in training with Cus who saw the higher power in Wilt who was a rare one off physical and mental speciman. 'Tis what it 'tis, and the two other later attempts of the fight were just Wilt leveraging the Lakers fo' mo' $$$ than an Ali fight could pay back then.

Wilt....because Ali never threw body punches and can't reach Wilt's head!

Kidding. I'm going with experience and Ali.

I've never heard of Wilt having a amateur career & I know he never had a pro fight. And this was a 15 round pro debut for Wilt. I think Ali just does Wilt like Floyd did Conor & plays with his food a lil bit. Wilt would take himself out more than Ali would early cuz Wilt would be more tired than he'd ever been while getting punched in the face & body.

Ali by KO in 6 or 7. I think Wilt would have a harder time holding up his 280lb frame than Conor did his 150lb frame with Floyd so he doesn't last as long. Plus Wilt had no actual fight experience at all & I tend to think team sports stamina & boxing/mma stamina are two different animals.

I think Ali was genuinely concerned about taking that fight and risking a possible freak loss to Wilt, which would shatter his legacy. That said, if they had fought I would favor Ali by wide decision. I think Wilt would put the earmuffs on for most of the fight and try to lean his weight on Ali. Use and stay behind his jab and miss a lot. Ali would shine in the later rounds and cruise to an easy win. Showboating and making it look easy.

Wilt was a great athlete, but boxing is a different animal. Many pro athletes have attempted the crossover and failed miserably. There are no teammates in the ring. No time outs, no substitutions. I would also pick just about any top HW of that era to beat Wilt.

            - -70 yr old Cus showed a disbelieving Ali how Frazier was gonna whoop him, giving him a cut to boot. I'll take Ali's word that he didn't want to fight Wilt for the obvious reason he didn't wanna get whooped. Little Joe a much easier decision and Ali still got whooped! Wilt not just a great athlete, he was a one off mental and physical speciman. Time for U derelicts to study up!

Jim Brown, another superior "athlete" thought he wanted to get in the ring with Ali as well. Muhammad quickly changed his mind after a meeting in a park.

Boxing isn't a game. Wilt may have a little success early on, but Ali would figure out the timing a chop him down. Superior speed, reflexes and ability set them worlds apart.

It takes a registered, thoroughbred halfwit to bet on a checkers champion in a poker tournament.

There was obviously talk of Wilt fighting boxers long before Clay's name ever came up.

And here is an article that puts to rest many absurd Chamberlain track myths.

Furthermore, Wilt was of course not one of the strongest men in the world. Perhaps he was one of the strongest among basketball players. The bean pole could probably not even finish the stone lift in the world's strongest man competition. He might get a few stones up onto their pedestals before his bird legs cracked on him.

                  Unless you think this:

                  Is stronger than this:

Even--I say even--Battilda probably sees boxing is headed for freaklǝnd, and boxing customers with it.
