Jake Kilrain vs John L Sullivan

    Hi all,

This is my first post. I don't know how often I'll visit the site but thought I'd try and show you a framed supplement to the National Police Gazette dated June 15, 1889.

This hung in my grandfathers fishing shack in Albany Western Australia for many years and I salvaged it a few years ago and framed it. It is hard to photograph because of the glass and reflection but I think you'll understand.

The top writing says "Supplement to the National Police Gazette june 15, 1889. Elsewhere it mentions New York Police Gazette
    .
The writing around the belt says" Police Gazette heavyweight Champion Prizering belt of the world offered for competition by Richard K Fox New York May 1884"

The writing at the bottom says:
Jake Kilrain and John L Sullivan
"The twenty thousand dollar pugilists as they will appear in the ring near New Orleans July 8, 1889".

My Aunty is 85 and she can recall it hanging on the wall during her childhood, so i assume it is original.

    Hope you enjoy.

Neither of these guys looks like Sullivan to me. . . . I have never seen a photo, close up of face, for Kilrain but I have read that he was long/lanky looking guy.

Several pics here including the one from the op. No closeups of kilrain though.

            Here’s one of him though:

Thanks for the photo; that photo of Kilrain is clear enough.

If you told me the fighter on the left side of the poster is an older Kilrain I'd say OK - that works -- but I still can't see Sullivan in the fighter on the right. Maybe I am being too demanding on the art work of the day.

                - -Let's face it , artwork starts with the eye of the beholder artist to be distilled thru the eyes of the washed and unwashed public.

An Andy Warhol of Sully would be an idea of Andy's art, not a likeness a likeness of Sully and so on.

Btw, Andy and that (Bisquea??) graffiti sprayer were scheduled to fight an exhibition that roused up all the "Art Experts" that may never have never been fought.

The sprayer would mangle Sully and Kilrain!!!
