Talk about fighting under the radar.
At a time when ESPN, and soon DAZN and Showtime, have put out programming for prizefighters to showcase their talent, Ronald Cruz is doing the opposite.
Cruz stopped Lisandro de los Santos in round four on July 10 at Papas and Beer in Rosarito Beach, Mexico to improve to 17-1, 12 knockouts.
The 28-year-old from the Los Angeles suburb of North Hollywood battered the game de los Santos throughout much of the fight, but was deducted a point for a low blow in round three after being repeatedly warned by the referee.
The bigger Cruz went on the attack in round 4, mostly throwing and landing combinations to the head of de los Santos. Cruz briefly trapped de los Santos in a corner and let his hands go, prompting a stoppage by the referee.
Cruz is now scheduled to fight again in an eight-round bout on September 5 at Ho-Chunk Gaming in Wittenberg, Wisconsin
De Los Santos, who resides in Agua Prieta, Mexico, drops to 25-20-1, 11 KOs. All of his knockout losses have come by knockout.
Featherweight Malikai Johnson stopped Rigo Cruz Cebreros (2-4) of Agua Prieta in the opening round. An accumulation of punches dropped Cruz to the canvas, and although he beat the count, the fight was waved off. Johnson, who resides in Sacramento, improves to 7-0-1, 5 KOs.
Heavyweight Roberto Thomas White (18-12-3, 18 KOs) of North Las Vegas, Nevada, who turned 50 on July 6, won by knockout after Francisco Soto (4-3) injured his shoulder in the third round and was not able to continue.
Thomas White is now unbeaten in his last 15 bouts.
In a clash of featherweights who reside in nearby Tijuana, Luis Montellano stopped Arturo Ballesteros (2-9, 2 KOs) to improve to 2-7-2, 2 KOs.
Promoter of the July 10 card was Promotions Quinonez.
