Jason Cunningham made a successful second defence of his European super-bantamweight title as he knocked down Terry Le Couviour three times with body punches before stopping him in the sixth round in Telford.
At 32, Cunningham is enjoying a glorious autumn to his career, having won British, Commonwealth and European titles in the past year.
He took a round to size up his French opponent, who put pressure on him early on, as Cunningham look to score and move. A big left to the body dropped Le Couviour midway through the second round.
Early in the third, another left to the body dropped Le Couviour again after a bit of a delayed reaction.
There was no rush from Cunningham, despite Le Couviour’s energetic attacks, In the sixth, he landed a decent left upstairs before getting through with a crushing left to the midriff that sent him to his knees.
Le Couviour shook his head as Swiss referee Fabian Guggenheim counted and, while he actually got up at the count of eight, Le Couviour walked back to the corner prompting Guggenheim to wave it off. The time was 53 seconds of the sixth round.
Popular middleweight Nathan Heaney kept his winning run going as he got off the floor to claim a hard-fought points unanimous decision over Diego Ramirez, of Argentina.
Heaney was on the floor in the first round after being caught with his hands down by a swinging left counter for Ramirez, but that aside, it was quite a convincing win for Heaney, who boxed well and outworked Ramirez.
Terry O’Connor scored it 97-93, Agapito Gomez 98-91 and Francesco Ramacciotti 97-92.
Unbeaten Liverpool super-bantamweight Andrew Cain took only 19 seconds of a ten-round fight to beat Argentina’s Pablo Ariel Gomez and pick up a minor WBC belt in the process.
Cain dropped Gomez with the first serious punch he threw, a shopping right hook, which landed high on the side of the head and dropped in Argentinian to his knees.
Gomez was up almost instantly, too quickly as he looked unsteady. And as he walked back to the ropes, raising his hands to signal to referee John Latham that he was OK to continue, the referee waved it off.
“I was just thinking ‘seek and destroy’,” Cain said. “I feel I’ve got nothing to celebrate yet, I’m nowhere near where I want to be. I’ve got dreams and goals and aspirations that I’ve got to fulfil.”
Eithan James set up an English title eliminator next month as he worked hard for an eight-round points win over Ben Fields at super-lightweight. James, 21, warmed to the task and hit Fields repeatedly without ever really having him in trouble. Indeed. Fields stayed dangerous throughout as James was open to looping shots, one of which caught him clean with only a few seconds remaining.
Referee Michael Alexander scored it 78-75.
Liverpool super-bantamweight Bradley Strand moved to 7-0 with a six-round points win over Ally Mwerangi, of Tanzania, referee John Latham scoring it 60-53.
Welterweight Owen Cooper, 21, was also taken the full six by Richard Helm before taking it 59-56 on referee Latham’s card to move to 6-0.
