Former super middleweight champion George Groves is very impressed with the career of Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.

The Mexican superstar is currently the king of the super middleweights.

Last month, he knocked out Caleb Plant to become the undisputed champion at 168-pounds - as he unified the WBO, IBF, WBA, WBA titles.

As the year comes to a close, Canelo has numerous options at his feet - including a possible move to cruiserweight to face WBC champion Ilunga Makabu. Canelo is also considering a return to light heavyweight to fight one of the champions - and there is always the option of remaining at super middleweight to face unbeaten two-time beltholder David Benavidez.

Groves is very confident in Canelo's ability to beat Makabu - even with their current 32-pound weight difference.

On the other hand, he believes light heavyweight champions Artur Beterviev and Dmitry Bivol would be solid opponents.

"You need power to get Canelo's respect, but I don't think that will be enough. Canelo is so clever, he's so good, and I can't see anybody troubling him, especially not at super middleweight," Groves told Sky Sports.

"David Benavidez lingers between super middleweight and light heavyweight. He's a very well schooled fighter, but he must be more disciplined. You'll need plenty of discipline for the Canelo fight. The top light heavyweights like Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev would provide a genuine test for Canelo.

"He's talking about fighting Ilunga Makabu at cruiserweight and Canelo probably beats him all day long, but all of a sudden you're in a different sort of fight. Usyk would be far too big for him, but I doubt Usyk would ever come back down to cruiserweight now."
