The combination of Japanese influences, Chinese ex patriots, and even local indigenious forms, along with the proximity to the Ryuki Islands, made for a fantastic mix of styles and influences. Fairbanes wrote about Shanghi in the 1920's... with Sikh Indian stick fighters, Japanese Ex Samurai Ju Jutsu men, Chinese Gung Fu, and Russian Sambo, among other things, and this is the only other place that could compete with Hawaii in having so many participants in the martial arts! When looking at martial arts competitions, Brazil and Hawaii stand out. There are documented matches between boxers, Ju Jitsu men and Catch Can/ European Wrestlers that took place regularly.
