Comments Thread For: De La Hoya: Mares Can Be The Pound For Pound King

Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya says WBC featherweight champion Abner Mares (26-0-1, 14KOs) has the necessary qualities to become the best fighter in the world, pound-for-pound. At age 27, Mares has already captured titles in three weight divisions and beat a who's who of top fighters along the way. On Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California - he will make the first defense of his new title against former two division champion Jhonny Gonzalez.

That's just promoter talk. Mares needs to learn how to better slip shots. His "rock 'em sock 'em" fight with Ponce was anything but impressive. Entertaining but certainly devoid of boxing skill.

I'd love to see him fight a REAL P4P champ like Rigondeaux at a catchweight of 124 pounds who I think would ice him within 8 rounds.

Fight Rigondeaux and get your ass whooped Mares. Rigo will show these little Mexicans what real boxing is all about and once he stops them we will here all the crying on here about how Rigo is boring haha. Rigo will show Santa Cruz what a real body shot is.

It's cool I get that all the time. Don't really think Ward is as good as everyone else does.

whats funny is you touting a Rigo instead of saying "Roman Martinez will show Mikey Garcia".

"Amateur" is indeed a fitting title for you.

What are you talking about? Mares has one of the best resumes in boxing right now. Probably only Carl Froch has a better one.

Abner can definitely make it to P4P #1 if Floyd retires and if Ward has a loss somewhere along the way.

I'd love to see him fight Rigo. Win or lose he'd give a better showing than Nonito in my opinion.
