With Silva's great performance and easy win over Griffin last night, it cements his claim for P4P #1 status, although the status is still highly contested. As I predicted, Silva used his accuracy and great defense to force Griffin to miss and picked the opportunity to land a clean punch that dropped Griffin. Griffin adopted his old all-out wild punching strategy that cost him the fight and that's exactly what I expected from him.
People were criticizing Silva left, right and centre over his last two performances...even questioning his ability and degrading his P4P status. However, there were still many people that overlooked the criticism and defended his P4P status and his ability to put on an entertaining match and still be considered the king. Glad to say I was one of them and most hardcore fans on boxingscene were too. Glad to see many casual fans that once criticized Silva are back on the bandwagon, as they constantly jump on and off whenever a fighter wins or loses.
More to the point...Silva vs. Machida won't happen. Why? Because they're both former training partners and good friends. Silva is also getting older and doesn't wish to fight him anyway. Also, they both have a very elusive and technical style that wouldn't work well when matched up against each other. Silva has excellent striking and accuracy and rarely gets hit. He waits for his opponent to be the aggressor so he can counter and land effectively. The exact same can be said for Machida. Essentially, we would probably see 5 punches thrown the entire fight by both fighters.
The problem is...the casual and uneducated fan looks at fights based on a P4P or fighter vs. fighter perspective rather than a stylistic match-up where both fighter's styles are pinned against each other. They look at the fighter's status rather than the fighter's style. As we've seen, just because Griffin was the bigger and stronger opponent than Silva, it didn't mean he was going to win. Griffin style was tailor made for Silva. Which is why Silva vs. Machida would be a great money fight and great hype but would be far too technical for there to be any action.
