    "Hip-Hop" and "Rap"

What is your interpretation of these terms? What connotations do they have?

I use "Hip-Hop" to refer to the culture/movement, and "Rap" to refer to the genre and the actual technique. One is an element of the other.

I usually hear the terms used to differentiate between artists (i.e. so-and-so is hip-hop while so-and-so is rap) based on artistic merit. This is where the phrase "Real Hip-Hop" comes from.

Ironically, I thought of this topic while watching his lectures last night.

Hip hop is a multidimensional concept

        It's life, it's acceptance, it's truth, it's a feeling, a movement rooted in history.

Rap is a grind and a struggle, where the elloquent craft masterful verses with their wordplay.

Rap can be good or bad, but hip hop is hip hop. It surpasses the concept entirely. Hip hop can't be good or bad, it can only be real.
