A California judge ruled Monday that rapper Young Buck — accused of stabbing Jimmy James Johnson, the Los Angeles man who allegedly attacked hip-hop impresario Dr. Dre during November's second annual Vibe Awards ceremony — must stand trial on a single assault charge.
Judge James Dabney found there was sufficient evidence to try Buck, born David Darnell Brown, according to a report by The Associated Press. The 24-year-old rapper is due back in court for arraignment Tuesday (June 7).
Young Buck pleaded not guilty to the charge back in January. He faces up to eight years in prison if convicted. Johnson, who was charged with the assault on Dre, was also ordered to stand trial last month; he, too, maintains his innocence.
Authorities claim Johnson punched Dre several times in the face when the legendary producer refused to sign an autograph for him. The attack set off a chair-heaving brawl that spread to involve many of the 1,000 audience members in attendance. Police were called in to restore calm and used pepper spray to disperse the crowd. At some point during the commotion, Young Buck allegedly stabbed Johnson in the chest, collapsing one of his lungs.
Outside the courthouse on Monday, Buck's defense attorney Leonard Levine told reporters that he was "confident" that "when all the truth comes out, he'll be exonerated."
Young Buck briefly went into hiding after the incident, but later surrendered himself to Santa Monica, California, police back in November. He's been free on $500,000 bail since his initial arrest.
Young Buck has struck a deal for his alleged assault at last year’s Vibe Awards.
The rapper's attorney, Scott Leemon, said the charges have been "favorably resolved" with the Los Angeles County district attorney's office but said he could not elaborate until the deal is discussed in court on December 12.
Buck, whose real name is David Darnell Brown, was ordered in June to stand trial, and December 12 was scheduled as a jury trial date setting, where a start date in early 2006 was expected to be set.
The 24-year-old rapper has been out on $500,000 bail since his arrest last fall and pleaded not guilty in January.
Buck was accused of stabbing Jimmy James Johnson, who pleaded guilty in September to punching Dr. Dre at the second annual Vibe Awards last November. Johnson was sentenced to one year in jail and three years of probation and was ordered to stay away from Dre for three years.
The melee was caught on tape and investigators are still trying to identify two other individuals seen brandishing knives.
