That s a sad sad story. I got plenty of russian buddies in sf, and they never had any problems finding work. they are all phds in Math, Physics, and Engineering. Most started their own companies, and a few work at think tanks.

I think more talented folks get lost in the bs of easily fixable issues in the US still in 2019. I think the bottom in the US could be much higher than it is at the moment & allow more mfers to achieve their highest high in society, which in turn only makes the US better, with a lot less misery.

American dream is about no one preventing you from trying.

It's not about guaranteeing you'll get it.
