We pay some form of taxes for services such as the NHS, Police, Social Care etc... but it isn't that expensive compared to if say someone got ill in the US and even had health care.

The NHS released her after she was attack with a brain hemorrhage, and then she had to be rushed back it.
She was not well enough to be released, and still had a serious issue and they released her.
She also had pass issues with the NHS which was misdiagnosed, and was turned away by the doctors and hospital, in the end she had to go back to Italy to get treated for a life saving operation.
The police also failed her, she was attacked before by these girls, and in that last attack they broke her 16 year old sister's leg. But despite witnesses , police said since the CCTV was not working they couldn't do nothing.

Most GPs have urgent slots and if something is really that bad then go to A+E. And in regards to OP's knee, in a lot of cases of orthopaedic surgery, its been shown that conservative management(i.e exercises) is just as effective as surgery (which can and often does make things worse) so they dont just rush into it. Its a last resort.
Pretty much, I'm a healthy guy, strong, young, can still walk around and I work, so I am low priority.
But I can't run, can't train my legs, no explosive actions, and it causes me pain, especially at night.
Maybe when I can't walk they will think it is serious enough to give me some treatment.

I've taken out health insurance now, about £15 a week, not sure how helpful they are at the moment.
