i had a double major in college. i studied communication, and sociology. my concentration in sociology was institutions and organizations. i read and wrote a ton, probably 150+ pages a semester of finished copy writing.

sociology is largely useless, but there are specific areas of the study that have real value. cop shops, social worker programs, and urban planning. the rest will probably get you 35K a year at a nonprofit [which might sound good to some of you young guys, but it really isn't when the student loan people are breathing down your neck.]

communication was a more broad area of study. it definitely helps me with what i do, but it isn't something that helped prepare me directly for what i'm doing today.

if i were to do college over again, i would have picked a single major, probably history. that's another largely useless degree, but i would have enjoyed the hell out of it, and it wouldn't have been worse than the degree that i earned. i run a small business, and could have gotten into it with a degree in history as easily as with the one i earned.

i've toyed with the idea of going to grad school for several years now. the truth is, i still have no idea what i want to do when i grow up, and that it would be a waste of time and money at this stage.

My UG was in History - fun but not the most practical.

Am deciding between PhD or MPP now. Already have MA in IR.

Such a job is the dream but odds are long.

At this time I am deciding between PhD [09/14 start] and MPP [09/15 start].

Both have + and - 's so its a hard pick.

Graduated with a Bachelor of Science last May with a double-degree in both Accounting and Finance. Started working in Operations in Fannie Mae after school and recently got my CPA license, so I joined a public accounting firm for good experience.

I'm making pretty good money for being only a year out of school, so I would say my experience with university was mostly positive.

Yeah true, because Accounting can get a bit too dry for me. Similar in jobs and also compensation.

Although with CPA you can start your own practice sitting at home doing taxes for people if you don't like working for a firm. CPA is like a commodity.

Most people associate CPAs with doing taxes for money, but there is very good money to make by doing bookkeeping and basically acting as an outsourced CFO for small businesses. Personally, I find that to be a hell of a lot more interesting than simply doing taxes.

I'm actually going for IT right now, dabbled a tiny bit in it but I have a little while to go before I get to the interesting stuff. Screwed up bad in high school because of personal problems so I'm stuck at nearby community college until I can earn an associates degree one day, then hopefully move on to bigger and better things. Ironically, I was going to set my major in accounting but had someone convince me otherwise. Good luck mang.
