jones' character is newly retired and without direction. he's thinking of his father, a man in whose footsteps he followed, and from whom he likely learned a great deal. our fathers guide us.

his father went ahead to build a fire. jones doesn't know what's up ahead - what he calls the "dark and the cold," - but he knows that his father is going to be there when he gets there.

      you figure it out.

Thats is the vital bit. He woke up; In his dream there was something good waiting for him in the end. But he woke up, and it was just a dream. So he doesnt have the faith that things will be ok in the end.

Obviously some people found this film thought-provoking, but it left me feeling flat, unsatisfied and uninspired.
By reading this you COMPLETELY missed the point of the film. the "major plot lines" were not major, that's the point. Tommy Lee Jones was the protagonist, he was the main character in the movie and everything that happened around him was just leading him and the movie to the conclusion we got to.

I see the ending as perfect, literally perfect for what the movie was intending. That and "There will be Blood" are my two favorite films of the last decade.

Tommy Lee Jones' character may have been the protagonist in the novel, but in the film he was on the fringes of the story until he is pushed front and centre for the closing scene.

Fcuk man I didn't want to see any Michael Bay blockbuster **** but I do want to see a move that engages me. This movie engaged me with the rivalry between Brolins character and Bardums character. But this rivalry came to a ridiculously unsatisfactory conclusion. To basically be told that that the plot line that was the main focus for 3/4's of the film was actually so unimportant that it didn't even merit a proper conclusion is not an ingenious bit of story telling, but rather a slap in the face for anyone who became emotional engaged in that storyline.

Sorry but you missed the boat......

Brolin and Bardums characters where just a way of telling a sad but true inevitability of what happens to all of us. It was poetic, riveting and eerie all at the same time.

On a side note, Tommy Lee Jones is a very underrated actor. Dude is a beast in the game. Not many can pull of the acting he does, with the accent he has.

Why couldn't this poetic, riveting and eerie story have been told AND have a proper conclusion to the storyline that was the focus of the first 3/4's of the film?

I agree with this. I personally loved the movie, and liked the ending. I understand people not liking it though as the idea of the movie gets lost a lot easier than it does in the book. Which in turn the ending works a lot better in the book than movie.

Mainly because reading shootouts and a man hunt is not nearly as spectacular as watching one at which point the action kind of over takes the theme so the ending doesn't really match up.
