I just think that in order to ram home the meaning of the film the audience were deliberately shown the least satisfying conclusions to all the major plot lines and that led to the film being no where near as entertaining as it should have been.
Obviously some people found this film thought-provoking, but it left me feeling flat, unsatisfied and uninspired.
I see the ending as perfect, literally perfect for what the movie was intending. That and "There will be Blood" are my two favorite films of the last decade.

Tommy Lee Jones was the protagonist, he was the main character in the movie and everything that happened around him was just leading him and the movie to the conclusion we got to.

It was masterfully done man, I know most people want to see shoot em up ****, **** and t1ts flying out, but this movie was genius.

To basically be told that that the plot line that was the main focus for 3/4's of the film was actually so unimportant that it didn't even merit a proper conclusion is not an ingenious bit of story telling, but rather a slap in the face for anyone who became emotional engaged in that storyline.
Brolin and Bardums characters where just a way of telling a sad but true inevitability of what happens to all of us. It was poetic, riveting and eerie all at the same time.
On a side note, Tommy Lee Jones is a very underrated actor. Dude is a beast in the game. Not many can pull of the acting he does, with the accent he has.

Mainly because reading shootouts and a man hunt is not nearly as spectacular as watching one at which point the action kind of over takes the theme so the ending doesn't really match up.
