I understand your reasoning but ive been playing music a while and one thing i have learned is that you have to play for yourself...no one else.

Write what you believe...sing what you feel.

By going by a formula your too worried about what people want.

I mean no disrespect by any of this BTW
I think they regret it mostly because they had to play it way too often, they were burnt out on it. If not for that Creep is an amazing song that just has an effect on people. First time they played in the studio everyone gave them a standing ovation. And you can tell by the way he sings it that it means something to him.

Mm I'm not entirely sure what you're talking about b/c in that post I said I would advise them to start out pop. And then move out to what they want. Once you've hit it big, as long as you're not bound by some crappy contract you signed, you don't need major labels.

Music is supposed to be listened to as an album, a collective piece of work. Not as random individual songs.

Also to blame are mainstream radio stations who play NOTHING that isn't in the chart. And MTV.

The majority of the music buying public is made up of people brainwashed into downloading the newest and highest placed songs in pop charts.

      And it fucking sucks!!!!!!!!!!!
I dont see that there is anything wrong with just downloading the odd single. It means its easier to sample new kinds of music u wouldnt have gone to the shops for.
The greatest thing about the internet is how easy it is to find rare or obscure music.
It has opened up all kinds of new music for anyone who wants to expand their horizons.

Young people will always eat up whatever the latest pop craze they are fed, even back in the 90's there were loads of 'fans' of the 'grunge' rock movement, that were just on the bandwagon.
It was the same with Beatlemania.

Most of Elvis's songs were already out there, but radio and the public only ltook and interest when white Elvis sang them.

The main problem is the charts are full of ****. I was introduced to Metallica, Led Zepplin etc through MTV back when i was a kid. They used to play some classic stuff. Mix it up.
I dont watch MTV no more. Theres nothing there of any real value.

People think Lady Ga Ga is 'an artist'. FFS!!!

I used to be proper into Sonic Youth, but I've not listened to them for ages. My favourite of their albums in Murray Street, an unusual choice I know. But I think I've kinda grown out of them or something, but they're still a really good band.

And Konstantin, a lot of artists don't have to make pop music to become successful and famous, or you don't even need to be on a major label. Most of the time I think musicians make music because they enjoy it rather than the objective of making money. There will obviously be examples to prove otherwise.

I would say the internet is one of the best things to happen to music for years, everyone can make music and everyone can hear music. It's a win-win situation for all parties involved. It's only (mainly) the major labels that complain about illegal downloading because it's them that are losing money from it. Bands still make music for tours and the like.

Do you remember when Prince had the words "Slave" written on his face?

Even an established artist like him was given the shaft by his record label. The label basically tells you what type of music is best for you, then takes your music from you as their own property.

Music labels are vampires that suck the blood out of artists.

Also, true artists have integrity, I mean what if you don't want to do "pop"? Like Alicia Keys but was told the only way you sign is to sell yourself out?

I understand your concept, it's just not that easy.

I've only bought one CD in my life, then I found out you can DL that **** for free, and never bought one again.

I agree, they aren't the most lovable companies around. But for some bands it's the best way to get your music heard by a large audience. Many good bands toil and don't get their work out because they just don't know how to market themselves / haven't made the right connections.

Actually it's pretty funny, it's quite a bit like politics. People always talk **** about the political system and how people are elected etc. But the fact is the way the politicians run is directly influenced by the voters themselves. If they don't say certain things, dress a certain way, have a certain faith... they aren't gonna be voted into office.

What ****s me off more than anything is these twats calling themselves 'recording artists'.

They have no artistic talent, they dont write their own songs, play their own music, compose anything, produce anything, they are even told what to wear and how to act.

                They are not artists.

Performers yes, entertainers yes, but not artists.

I haven't been paying attention to new music recently. A friend compiled a Best of '09 list that had different genres of music and gave it to me during the holidays.

Listening, I was mildly suprised. There's some good stuff out there at the moment. Didn't really think that was the case.

Music probably just needs better sources. MTV hasn't cared for years, the radio has been a formula for decades and the Internet is too spread out. There's probably good websites that pick good new music, but not enough people know about them, I'm guessing.

It's always been like that with people only listening to the singles.
You have to appreciate music to listen to an album as a whole.
Plus (mainstream wise) what good music is there?
You gotta delve deep to find worthwhile artists.
