thanks for making this a public poll gave me a laugh.

both are great actors, Lewis has shown more range due to his variety of roles. My Left Foot foot for instance.

      Denzel couldnt pull this off.

The Daniel-Day has picked his movies carefully while Denzel is just making money(which theres nothing wrong with).

          EXACTLY

I don't mind Denzel, but he always acts the same. Whether he is playing the bad guy or the good guy, his character is basically bad denzel or good denzel he doesn't change a lot of his traits. I could still see him as Denzel. Whereas if you know Daniel Day Lewis in interviews and such, you'll see that he is far from any of the characters he plays. he becomes someone completely different.

Russell Crowe didn't storm out of the Oscars for nothing when Denzel got that bull**** award for "Training Day" over Crowe's "A Beautiful Mind". Crowe vowed to never attend the oscars again. I don't know if he upheld that promise, but I totally understand his sentiment.

It's a mixture of Denzel simply not being that great, and Denzel wanting to make blockbusters that make a lot of cash.

I can't debate this anymore though. This isn't opinion, it is fact.

It's like comparing Ray Robinson to Arturo Gatti. Denzel, while I like him as much as anyone, can't hold Lewis's jockstrap.
No, the reason is because they are rich, middle-aged men who can't relate or otherwise aren't interested in making films with ********** being main characters, in non race-based films. martin scorsese put Malcolm X performance as the top 10 of the 90's, yet he's never even offered denzel anything not even once & Spielberg only offered Denzel the part of the unintelligible, idiotic yet noble slave in Amistad. Nevertheless Denzel sill proves his merit by raising the quality of mediocre scripts/films with his performances.

And If we're talking Robinson/Gatti here than Denzel is Robinson and Gatti is DDL, especially in theatre. The theatre is where an actor truly excels, or uterly falters. Unlike Film(which is a directors medium) the theatre is like a tightrope, there's no re-takes of scenes, and in the Theatre Denzel has proven himself way better than DDL, a dude who hasn't touched the theatre since he was laughed off the stage by critics in the 80's. Denzel consistently does theatre, even Shakespeare and is going back to do some this year.
DDL doesn't even have alot of range. When's the last time he did a comedy or a action movie? when he tries to do anything other then intense period pieces he fails(read:Nine the musical that's being removed from theatres nationwide).

Consider Christian Bale. He's done excellent, screen dominating, work, when the whole show is about him (AMERICAN PSYCHO, THE MACHNIST ect) but his tendency to be overshadowed when placed next to another charasmatic leading man has not gone unnoticed (Russell Crowe, Sam Worthington, Johnny Depp, Heath Ledger arguably Hugh Jackman ect) and has dented his reputation somewhat. It's no longer seen as a particularly difficult task to overshadow Christian Bale in a movie, despite his intense acting style.

Now, DDL isn't Bale. He has more presence, and more intensity. Dicaprio was still an immature talent when DDL starred with him in GONY (and his unconvincing performance was evidence of that). Dicaprio, like Paul Dano, was a kid that was out of his depth. He's since improved, but he was far from a worthy adversary for DDL back then. If GONY was about Liam Neeson's Priest versus DDL's Butcher, that would have been something special. Neeson was matching DDL stride for stride in the film....unfortunately, it was only a 5 minute cameo at the start before Priest Vallon died, and Dicaprio's callow and boyish character took over. Dicaprio never stood a chance.

I'd like to see DDL go up against someone like Denzel Washington, who constantly goes up against major male star talents and rarely finds himself overshadowed, and frequently does the overshadowing himself. Washington is currently acting opposite the brilliant Gary Oldman (a British contemprary of DDL, and the two are often compared) in THE BOOK OF ELI, and all the early reviews suggest Washington gives the standout performance in the film, even though Oldman is playing one of his patented scenery chewing villains/anti-heroes (which managed to overshadow both Sean Penn and Ed Harris in STATE OF GRACE).
