Microsoft seems to want you to do a clean install.
really i think its that you have or had too much stuff on the hd. as far as recovering your stuff if you have the cd's to re install vista get your self a usb hard drive and install vista on that making absolutely positively sure your installing windows to the external hard drive and not the hard drive in your computer. once you have the new copy of windows installed you will be able to access all your old files. from their you can copy your files over to your external hd then reformat the drive inside your computer and reinstall windows to that so you dont have to carry around a usb hard drive with you everywhere you take your laptop.
that or you can talk to the geek squad at best buy but i hear there a tad pricey
though before that id try at least a good 10 restarts if any of them work and get you past the black screen i recommend you try to clean out anything you dont need till you have at least 15% of your hard drive free.Last edited by Spartacus Sully; 11-26-2009, 05:49 AM.

also are you sure a vista re-install disc would work? even if no other discs I put into the computer are doing anything?

Get on another computer. Download a BartPE ISO. Burn it to a CD. You can use this CD to boot from (make sure it's in the drive when you start up the PC), load it up and then save your important files to a USB stick.
Once you done that, you know your files are safe. Just wipe the damn operating system out by booting from a Windows disc and reinstalling Windows.
BartPE:
BTW, If you don't have a Windows disc, PM me. We can work something out. Vista sucks. Don't ever buy it. Use XP or buy Windows 7.
