austria in full lockdown and mandatory vaccines ordered to combat '5th wave'

other european countries likely to follow suit. Said there is 'no choice' but to lock people down as 1 in 10000 people are catching the virus over 7 day period. citizens will be expected to do there work at home still, they can get some fresh air as a treat but will receive fines if not complying with vaccine.

Austria, a country of 8.9 million, has one of the lowest vaccination rates in Western Europe — only 65.7% of the population are fully vaccinated.

Despite all the persuasion and campaigns, too few people have decided to get vaccinated, Schallenberg said, leaving the country no other choice but to introduce mandatory vaccinations in February.

The chancellor said the details would be finalized in the coming weeks but those who continued to refuse to get vaccinated would have to expect to be fined. In addition, booster shots are now available to all vaccinated individuals starting four months after their second dose.
I think they had been planning to just keep it to a lockdown of the unvaxxed but as cases have continued to rise they pretty well got no choice, plus I guess this is probably socially less divisive. Can see real big problems ahead though cos there's gonna be a lot of resistance to mandates especially in the conservative strongholds.

Austria, famous for Glocks, cakes, skiing and Hitler,

        not

Australia famous for Kangeroos, Sydney Opera House, beaches and Rupert Murdoch

There's a strong right wing / Nationalist movement in Austria though (their far right party got like 26% at the last election) which is driving a lot of the vaccine hestitancy. And they're talking about fining the unvaxxed something like 1500 euros or something (like maybe $1700). Won't be surprised to see it kick off. Lotta guns in Austria too, as you might imagine.

lockdown the unvaxxed to protect the vaxxed, when the vax doesn't even protect u from getting or transmitting. therefore we need to go full fascism on the non compliant?

can someone who believes the narrative try and explain this to me?

I can explain it although I ain't personally in favour of mandates except in the direst of emergencies... Fact is whilst both vaxxed and unvaxxed can spread it, it's spreading much more rapidly in the unvaxxed, plus the unvaxxed are utilising far more of the limited health resources that are needed for everyone cos they're far more likely to get seriously ill. So in short the unvaccinated are harming everyone else including those suffering from conditions entirely underated to COVID who can't be treated because of the beds and staff used to treat unvaccinated COVID patients. Government got a responsibility for the health and safety of all it's citizens including protecting them from the harmful acts of their fellow citizens - which is why we got shit like speed limits and smoking bans in public places. So there is a decent rationale from a societal point of view... question is what are long term costs gonna be of dividing a society like that, especially one that's already polarised.

However... firstly this is not just a lockdown of the unvaccinated anymore... they did bring that in first a few days ago but now they're extended it to the whole population cos the situation's kinda out of control. Probably just as well too because the divisiveness has the potential to be very destructive to the fabric of Austrian society itself.

Secondly whatever happens now ain't really the biggest problem... this 10 day lockdown now affects everyone more or less (though the vaccinated have more freedom of movement), but when it'll really kick off is when they make vaccination mandatory for everyone next February and start handing out the fines or even jail time for non-compliance.
