Mertersacker was our most consistent defender this season. Arsenal actually conceded the second fewest goals in the entire league. He is nowhere near a dud.

That's the kind of player Arsenal need. A goal hanger. Apparently his conversion rate was 32% last season and the average Premiership striker's was 16%

Podolski was carrying an injury all season and he still managed 16 goals and 11 assists. Giroud got 17 goals and 11 assists in his first season. Flops?

Used to be Sturridge and Welbeck not too long ago which was not bad.

I think the problem is that we have a tendency now to call up youngsters at a very young age to the full team because the fully grown players are not producing the goods, so the U21 team is always lacking in that respect. Also, we don't seem to care too much about the U21 team in this country whereas other nations take it more seriously.

Players like Phil Jones, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jack Wilshere could still be U21's (last time i checked) but they have been made full national team regulars at a very early age because of how bad our national team is doing. There may even be some others as i know you can be over 21 in the tournament if you were still 21 when the qualifying started or something.

Spain have got it alright because their national team is so packed with talent that their players have no chance of getting in the team so they all just go into the U21s. Plus i just think they take it more seriously in general. Nobody here would care even if England won the U21 tournaments.
