It's also heartening that City managed to get the same or better points totals than half the qualifiers for the knockout stages. In fact out of the 16 qualifiers City had better points and/or goal difference than 7 of them.

You serious,
Ronaldo,Tevez , Scholes and Van Der Sar is a dramatic improvement to most teams.
There is a hell of a difference to the team that played last night, they wouldnt have lost last night.
Van Der Sar was a big loss.
Scholes & Tevez were big-ish losses.
We shouldn't need Ronaldo to get a win over Basel, even though he is single handedly capable of doing so. I can't see how you think the difference is so big? We were at a turning point back then, we needed more players and Fergie just hasn't brought in enough to make up for the losses.
If Tevez was still here he'd be fighting for a place against Rooney, Hernandez, Berbatov and Welbeck. We don't need Tevez. Van Der Sar is a big loss, but De Gea is an adequate replacement. Scholes is probably the biggest loss after Ronaldo purely because of where he played. Our midfield is so weak, we lack any depth at all.
