Too much emphasis on enforcing 'short-passing' football.

Football goes through phases, Catenaccio was king in the 50/60s then Total Football took over and now we have everyone jumping on Spain's Tiki-taka bandwagon.

IMO, we should be focusing on our own style of football (fast, direct, effective) instead of trying to copy another. The reason why we don't have more talented footballers isn't because of how they're trained but because of the **** attitute. Too many youngsters on 15-20k getting told how great they are every week - no wonder the majority of them think they've 'already made it'.

But the fast english style can easily be overcome by a team that plays very technically and passes the ball around.

Teams need to have a more complete game, like Arsenal are great are passing, but are weak when it comes to just getting the ball into the box and shooting at goal. Barca got stumped by Inters stubborn defence and when their "total football" didn't work, they didn't really have a plan B.

I agree with the english mentality though, players are made gods before they've even proved themselves.

I truly believe this is the reason players like Lampard, Gerrard and others play so well for club but not for country.

I'm sure before your Henrys and Ronaldos people tried to emulate Weah, Best, Romário, Völler etc..

Their ability to play that way is only made possible by how they're developed as kids. If Gerrard and Lamps were instructed to play a certain way, it wouldn't make a blind bit of difference to whether they could play that way, as its down to your technical ability, which is nurtured from a very early age. Wenger is on record as saying something along the lines of, if you dont have any technical ability by the age of 12 or something, then you'll never develop it.

Asking Gerrard to play the way the Spanish players do, is like asking Ricky Hatton to slow the pace down, fight from longe range, he would get picked apart.

The reason Gerrard and Lamps play well for their clubs is cause they are surrounded by technically good foreign players. You put 11 Englishmen in a team, and what you get, is players who dont show for the ball in tight areas, as they dont trust their technique enough to accept the ball in those situations, therefore the man on the ball has no options, which is why England play the long ball so much, lack of options, its also why they look so rigid in their play, why they find it difficult to adapt to systems, the players are NOT interchangeable cause they will only accept the ball in certain areas. When Kevin Keegan resigned as England manager he was quoted as saying that English players dont trust each other enough with the ball.

As I said, clubs are developing these kids, see below.....

The Football Association's School of Excellence was established at Lilleshall in 1984 and closed in the Summer of 1999. During the mid-1980s to mid-1990s the England Team often trained at the centre, however, today most Premiership football clubs have now established their own centres of excellence based on the Lilleshall model and this is now a rarity. The school came in for some criticism due to its centralist and perceived anti-club agenda but its star pupils included Jermain Defoe, Michael Owen, Joe Cole, Scott Parker, Sol Campbell, Jamie Carragher, Wes Brown, Lee Whetton, Andrew Cole and Ian Walker.

Football was not as big then, it was no where near as televised as it is now, or as global as it is now, but the main point regarding that, is that there were not as many foreign players in the Prem as there are now.

If young english kids want a footballer to follow tey should look no further then Paul Scholes.. imo scholes is the type of player who would fit into the recent Barca/Spain teams.

His passing game long and short is fantastic and has a great success %

He is comfortable on the ball and can play out of trouble despite the fact that's he is small and lacked real pace. Erikson really ***ed up when he shunted him to the left of the diamond making him retire
