I can't readily say what I would suggest as an alternative, though. Maybe have 3 vs 3 like they do in hockey.

Or a more appropriate number (5 vs 5? 7 vs 7?) to suit the larger dimensions of a soccer pitch.

The players were dead on their feet, you can't just keep playing. It's literally not possible.
