Well I haven't stated this and being atheist doesn't automatically mean one doesn't have morals. However, in this generation, the overwhelming atheist majority have been influenced by one form of religion or another considering most of them were religious when they were young yet decided to become atheists. A person's adult life is generally influenced by their childhood. And if their morals and values (from a young age) were derived from Catholic parents that taught Catholic social teachings, then it's safe to conclude that said atheist was indeed influenced by Catholicism. However, I'm amazed whenever an atheist wants to take complete responsibility for his own morals as a child. Such arrogance is certainly something that should be pointed out.

Not all laws are passed on the basis of morality. Perfect example is ********. Many pro-choice advocated don't necessarily agree with the decision to willingly end the life of an unborn child however, they advocate the choice and freedom to do so. Here in Canada, ******** is legal as passed by a law, however this doesn't mean ******** is moral.

"one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws"
Society will continue to redefine laws regardless of abiding by an ancient book or not. You are somehow connecting both State and Religion however, in North America there is a clear discinction between the two. There may be Christian influence in North America however, laws are not "directly" made from the Bible.

This "book" has shaped civilizations, and has been the foundation for many nations and legal systems around the world. I think there isn't much of a debate about whether this "book" i.e. The Bible, has a huge influence on humanity both in history and in the present time. However, the question is whether it has been a positive influence or negative influence. Would you conclude that the Bible (such as the teachings of Christ) has ultimately been a negative influence or do you think it has been a positive influence in mankind?

Now you're just lying to make a point. Are you going to tell me that you went by your own morals "at a very early age"?
No, though I have always been something of a contrarian. However it is absolute truth that I was raised by one catholic and one non-religious parent. My whole life I have tended to reject rules and beliefs which I considered absurd.

As I've concluded, you received your morals from a Catholic background and Christian upbringing. The least you can do is conclude that you were raised by Catholic parents and was a Catholic at a "very early age".
No, I was raised by one catholic parent and one nonreligious parent. My dad has been to church perhaps a couple of dozen times in his adult life, all of which were for things like weddings and funerals.

There may be Christian influence in North America however, laws are not "directly" made from the Bible.
      Not for want of trying.

Well, that was the wonderful discussion i was involved in.
        Objective morality/Gods laws and stuff.

        .

        Of course.
Its undeniable religion has influenced our society. And possibly our values, laws and moral understanding. Yet i dont know enough about history to say how our society would have been now without the influence of Christianity and the bible.
I believe most people, believers and non-believers, and cultures unaffected by Christianity, in general have the same type of reasoning and values.

Although religion and state are meant to be separate, there seems to be a feeling especially in America, that religious belief and morality go hand in hand. Which i dont agree with. The laws past may not be in accordance with the bible, but the obvious examples of gay marriage, stem cell research and ******** have all been heavily affected by religion.

The bibles influence has been a positive one. Although the spread of Christianity wasnt exactly pretty. Again, i dont know my history very well, bored me to **** in school. It seems to me the bible is a collection of stories, parables, philosophies from around the world, and just as science and maths have been developed by certain cultures and then spread, enlightening the rest of the world, the Bible did somthing similar. It is a 'best of' collection.
Yet people pick and choose how to interpret the stories, and what should be taken literally or even completely ignored.
It is our reasoning that enables us to find meaning in the Bible.
The Bible has been enlightening, but as a vehicle for spreading philosophies from other cultures and times.
Most people are good people, but give the Bible credit for their goodness.
It can be used to justify peoples values and prejudices.

The number of times ive been told to read the Bible for answers, but criticised for my critical interpretations. They say i have to read it with a 'pure heart'. i.e. i have to see the good in it, and not the bad. So im still relying on my own values to read the Bible from a biased stand point.
It is what u make it.

And thats why i find the idea of a moral barometer when discussing religion versus atheism or agnosticism strange.

At the same time the emphasis on different parts of the bible has been influenced heavily by different parts of society. The more sane sects of christianity have moved away from the hellfire and damnation stuff to some degree for example, and placed greater emphasis on not judging and not casting the first stone.

There is a reactionary force though which wants to bring the world back to prejudice and stoning, people who embrace christianity because it makes them feel superior to non-believers or christians they deem to be less devout.
