        Such a brutal war, these photos make it seem how real it was.

        Sometimes the black and white photos dont do it justice, make it seem fake so to speak.

          Yeah the Mauser was a very popular rifle, the French used the Lebel though.

            I never knew real colour photo's existed from this period until i saw a documentary on bbc4 a few years ago about the Lumière brothers who had develop a colour photo technique called Autochrome back in 1903, they were employed by the French during the war and produced some great pictures they seem much more real than black and white pictures.

              Nice pictures, they look misreble though, and I guess anyone would under those conditions.

                It's funny the colour photos somehow seem less real than the black and white photos we're more familiar with. The Great War brought human conflict out of the storybooks and into real life. No longer was war a noble undertaking by gentleman and adventuring rogues.

                  Autochromes I presume? They have that slightly surreal, almost painting-like quality to the image.

                      Great pics, color always makes events more realistic. I have an easier time visualizing what happened.
