BREAKING NEWS: CBO SAYS MINIMUM WAGE HIKE WOULD RESULT IN 1.4 MILLION JOBS LOST

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office this morning has released its analysis of the affects of the ********s’ proposed minimum wage hike. The bill would increase the wage in annual increments, to $15 per hour by June 2025. The CBO projects that the wage hike would:

• Reduce employment by 1.4 million workers… 56% more than the number of people it would raise out of poverty (0.9 million).

• In 2021, most workers who lost their job because of the higher minimum wage would still be looking for work.

• By 2025, half of the 1.4 million people who would be jobless because of the bill would have dropped out of the labor force.

• Less educated people would be the hardest hit by the reduction in jobs.

• The 1.4 million jobs lost is the average estimate, but the CBO says “there is a significant possibility of large reductions in employment” up to 2.7 million jobs.

• The 10-year budget deficit would increase by $54 billion, largely due to higher prices for goods and services resulting in more expensive federal expenditures.

• The cumulative labor cost for business would increase by $333 billion.

• Investment would fall, as less business activity would result in businesses constructing fewer buildings, although some of the effect would be offset by companies buying more automated machinery to replace workers.

• Prices would rise, especially in industries that require a high amount of lower-income labor.

• Real income would decrease for people whose wages were not hiked by the bill, as the increase in prices would make the cost of living more expensive.

• The increase in inflation would lead to a slight increase in interest rates as well.

• On the positive side, higher incomes among those workers impacted by the wage hike would increase demand for goods and services, but “after that initial boost” the “CBO expects that the economic effects from increases in demand would disappear.”

The CBO report describes the dynamic that results from the wage hike as:

“Higher wages would increase the cost to employers of producing goods and services. Employers would pass some of those increased costs on to consumers in the form of higher prices, and those higher prices, in turn, would lead consumers to purchase fewer goods and services. Employers would consequently produce fewer goods and services, and as a result, they would tend to reduce their employment of workers at all wage levels.”

Overall, the CBO estimates that raising the minimum wage would have a negative effect on real GDP.
