there's no reference in Pt. 3 about the bosses that Michael had killed in the first movie.

the reason why nobody took revenge on Michael is simply because of power and money. you don't destroy too much authority or you have anarchy and everybody loses. although it's never mentioned directly in the film, it IS mentioned in real life- as the same reason nobody ever took out Luciano for arranging the murders of Joe Masseria and Salvatore Maranzano during the Castellammarese War. the deaths of the 5 bosses was loosely based on this war.

But No one ever assassinated Luciano because he had a viable profitable alternative(the comission). Michael Corleone on the other hand murdered the heads of the five families. Not only is this extremely disrespectful, unless his family had more soldiers then all of the other four combined, it was suicidal. It doesn't take a genius to know 4 gunman are better than one. You have a beter chance allying yourself with one family and surviving then killing everyone of the Don's and potentially starting an entire coalition of soldiers against you. This is the same as Hitler With the ****s going against The British, Americans and russians. Had he kept the course and continually bombed Britain, he might've won, but instead he waged war on russia, stretched his military too far and ultimately loss. In reality I think this is what would've happened had Michael killed all the real Don's o fthe five Families. Evem the Gambinos of the 70's would've been ****ed.

although it's never clearly mentioned in the movies (it may be in the book as i haven't read it), i'm pretty sure Michael had made proper $$$ arrangements to keep the remaining families at bay. he shows this side of him during the meeting in Atlantic City in pt. 3

had he not done this then i agree with you in that it would have been total suicide. Puzo was just mimicking what Luciano did to build the 5 families. however, Puzo puts a spin in HIS plot by incorporating the same method to DESTROY the 5 families.
