Boxing fans would love to think that EA Sports is currently making a new Fight Night for Xbox One and PS4. However, EA Sports head Andrew Wilson says that they've decided to shelve the series for now.

There hasn't been a new Fight Night game since 2011's Fight Night Champion. It was a strong game, too, with a Metacritic hovering around 85. However, EA has decided to have the Champion team develop an Ultimate Fighting Championship game instead.

"Do I see a future for Fight Night? You know, sure. But right now, UFC is where our fighting focus is," Wilson told IGN.

Mixed martial arts has become hugely popular in the past seven years or so and EA has been trying hard to leverage the sports' popularity into a new game franchise. Back in 2010, they released EA Sports MMA to compete with THQ's UFC Undisputed series. However, THQ's financial problems spurred them to sell their exclusive UFC license to EA.

I'm curious whether EA is planning to make EA Sports UFC into an annual franchise. UFC Undisputed 2010, the second entry in THQ's series, sold poorly in spite of strong reviews. The fact that EA is shelving Fight Night altogether to produce the UFC series suggests that they may try to succeed where THQ failed, though.

Some might argue that EA should alternate Fight Night and UFC releases. This release schedule, they'd argue, would make fans a bit more eager for each sequel. However, it seems that EA doesn't think Fight Night is worth producing sequels for at all for now.

Why wouldn't they? It's alot easier to make UFC games. Don't have to deal with the hassle of getting fighter licenses.

Hopefully someone else will make a decent boxing sim. If not, I guess I'll be playing Fight Night Round 4 for quite a while.
