    Some info on punching power

A good puncher in boxing understands what a good punch is.

A good punch is not the heaviest punch, it's the sharpest punch.

If you look at the human body and head, the idea is to hit it sharp enough that the body absorbs the blow and it causes damage. If the shot is a push the body will actually just move back taking the danger off the shot.

You could hurt someone with an arm punch if you hit them sharp enough and they didn't see the shot coming and failed to brace for it.

Same goes for the brain, it's sitting in jelly, to hurt someone you have to hit it sharp enough that the brain jars in the jelly and rebounds.

It's all about piercing the target.

Older fighters used to try and pop the speed bag, to pop a speed bag you need to hit it very fast and sharp, if your shot is a heavy push the speed bag just moves. Think of it like punching a peice of paper and you are trying to rip it. 500 lbs of slow mass just moves it, 100 lbs sharply tears it.

The heavy bag is bad to learn punching on, so are hand pads. Both of them encourage wrong punching technique. The heavy bags original use was to toughen the hands up by wearing small thumb less gloves, and to strengthen punching muscles.

Double end bags used to be bigger so you could wack them hard and proper, I don't know what's up with these. Micro double ends or what benefit they hold.

And of course hitting a speed bag stationary (like a heavy bag).

A really light heavy bag might work as well, something that. Moves easy as to encourage you to hit it sharply. If you hit it sharp the bag won't move as the bag absorbs the shot.

The best way to generate a powerful punch is to reduce the recoil you get upon impact. To reduce recoil, everything has to be tight. From the moment of impact, you want to have the perfect form as to not allow any recoil into your structure. Strong forearms to keep your punch as immovable as possible is an underrated aspect in boxing.

Heavy bags are actually quite good to test your form upon impact. If you forget about retracting your fist and only extend and keep your fist there, you will notice how much of the recoil comes back to you. So then if you lose balance, or your structure fails, then you know your form is not good. You should be able to stay completely still as the recoil from the heavy bag and your punch moves back into you.

Its not so much a workout as it is a drill to perfect your technique and form upon impact. And then when you get the form down to perfection, you can work on the snap.

I think heavy bags are only good for practicing technique until you have learned it already.

A water bag might be a better deal.

Double end bags are for improving timing, accuracy and hand speed. All needed to throw a good powerful punch. You can also improve your foot work with movement when working the DE bag. Ideally you should be able to move a full circle around the bag while your working. They also get you moving your head out of the way when the bag comes back at you. Always a good idea to have evasive type movement after and during throwing punches.

I know what they claim they are used for. I just think the small ones are pointless. The way they are used.

The smaller ones are more for accuracy, but yeah I like at least a 7 inch DE bag. The Mexican ones are bigger yet and basically give both a head and body target. Also, it depends how tight they are strung. I think they should be loose enough to provide a range of movement that it will hit you when it bounces back...otherwise you are just pitter pattering with it. I like my DE bag. Much easier on the hands than the heavy. I wouldn't overlook it as a valuable training tool.

I agree with you on that.

Have you tried squeezing your bung hole together, really really tight, while throwing your power shots? …….Rockin'

Best punch I've seen recently is rigos non telegraphable straight left. Gets ferocious leverage on it and even when it misses he is still on balance.

Smaller ones are better to serve their purpose.
