I know this thread is old as dirt, but I'm new and just browsing around and saw this, and being a competitive grappler, I figured I'll answer the question.

Whether you want it to or not, grappling will develop your neck. Wrestlers work on it intentionally because you need to have a strong neck because you often bridge up on your neck with your weight + the weight of the dude on top of you all on your neck. I do submission wrestling and I noticed after maybe a month that my neck got a lot bigger. Too many reasons to list for why, but that's just the way it is.

I wrestled for only 3 years and I built my neck up alot.I guess due to neck bridges, 17 and a half inch neck for a 5'5 frame.

I no most heavyweights are fat but shannon briggs, wlad and peter arnt fat.
Also tim sylvia is one fat **** lol.

This was indeed a serious question as I found it strange as most boxers necks looked pretty normal and the UFC guys necks were massive. But looks like I got my answer.

its from wrestling, alot of people in UFC have been doing olympic freestyle wrestling since they were kids. One of the things you do to stop being pinned is bridge off of your neck which requires alot of neck strength.

if u got a big neck your head will not fling back when you get hit as much then with a small neck, and the biggger neck with stop whiplash for most punchs as well as give you more resistence against concussions the neck absorbs some of the punch so it slows down yor brain from hitting your skull.
